Ranger: Universal Weapon Feats

Post by BobTheSkull » Fri Jun 14, 2019 4:16 pm

Suggestion: Make any weapon feat taken for ranger (majority level ranger) apply to any weapon the ranger is proficient in.

Limitation: Only for 2/3 majority ranger level characters. Ranger(6)/fighter(3) gets the perk. Ranger(6)/Shadow Dancer(5) does not. Using it as a 2/3 majority perk instead of a perk at a given level is that it allows the pure ranger character to embrace the diverse ranger RP so long as they maintains their path and calling.

Implementation: this is very similar to the rogue rapier/dagger perk.

Reason: Rangers are the consummate generalists. They are not specialist melee fighters, they are not specialist archers, they are not specialist casters. However they do live in a realm of using all three, too less effect than any specialized character, but each to when most useful. Specifically between a ranged weapon and a melee weapon. A ranger should be competent in both, though their particularized specialization stems from the Path (archer/duelist) that they take. But an archer ranger should be able to use a melee weapon and a duelist should be able to use a bow to good effect. Allowing weapon feats to apply to all proficient weapons allows the ranger the versatility the class is known for. This would also allow those urban rangers to effectively play between melee and throwing knives/darts etc.

Balance: The perk is balanced in that it will primary serve to allow diversity not stacking benefit to the class. The ranger can choose to pull a bow, or sword, for a fight depending on what the situation calls for. The single place this could be a buff to power in combat is in a dual wield, utilizing two different weapons (making it the same as the rogue perk). Given the requirement of 2/3 majority ranger levels, this singular power increase is proportionally less than those to other classes but would go towards bring the ranger closer to being in line with them.

Not sure about full rangers, but I have seen rangers being complete badasses and they got a couple of awesome bonuses.

I dont think rangers need a boost tbh.

People are going to suggest, disguise it as feedback etc. People need an outlet. This is going to keep happening.
My suggestion; make a suggestion box2.

I'd give this to pure Fighter LONG before giving it to a class as incredibly powerful as Ranger.

I could see maybe giving Ranger a little bit of help in acquiring feats for one ranged and one melee weapon, since switching is part of their shtick.

Rangers get so much extra stuff on Arelith already. You can totally go Archer Path, be a melee-ranger, and still lose nothing by swapping between Sword + Board and a Bow.

Giving majority rangers essentially free weapon feats for the entire martial and simple weapon lineup is a tad overkill, even if the feats are limited to just weapon foci. As stated rangers are already solid generalists being able to wield martial weapons, use divine magics and gain damage against a selection of enemies all at full base attack.
At most you could ask for is probably recieving bane of enemies as a free feat at 21 ranger levels which works similiar to having epic weapon focus for all proficient weapons.

the goal was really only to allow/encourage rangers to be more evenly split in their switching role. a single melee and range is all that is necessary. Though I wouldn't want it predetermined like for the rogue feat as I like the idea of diversity of weapon choice. Particularly for rangers who can be an elven ranger with longsword/long bow, a hin ranger with short sword/crossbow or am urban ranger with dagger/throwing dart. I thought the scripting would be easier with just allowing all proficiency, though if someone more familiar with NWN scripting has a different way that would be just as acceptable.
