Taking levels in ranger after already taking twf and ambidextry

Post by Selinth » Mon Feb 11, 2019 4:59 am

So I've got a rogue with both twf and ambidextry as feats, and I was thinking about dual classing them ranger. Then I realized I'd get dual wield from that, which makes both of the previous feats pointless unless I want Improved twf without lvl 10 on the ranger. (which I don't)

So am I just kinda sorta screwed, remake the char if I want the ranger levels and different feats for those two? Or will taking a ranger level let me re-spend them? Or will they both just sit there and do the same thing and make me sad about having redundant feats?

I'm hoping I can change them, but I set those at early levels so its not like I can just walk back one level, change feats, then level back up again. If not I guess I'll stick with pure rogue but I just wanted to ask before fiddling with anything.

Anywho. Thanks for reading this.

Alas

You'll never walk alone. This sort of things happens to me as well.
On the bright side, we learn each time we build a new toon, don't we ?

Taking ranger also gets you martial weapons, shield, animal language, use of poison, access to to the great ranger armor, defensive dual wielding, a favored enemy or two, some tracking ability and some other things. It's not just about the 2 weapon fighting.

The ranger dual wield feat is also different than ambidexterity & two weapon fighting so it doesn't give you access to the improved 2 weapon feat. You have to take 9 ranger levels to get it that way. So you needed the feats anyway if you didn't want to take that many ranger levels.

It's not necessarily a waste, though if this was the build forum someone would tell you fighter is better choice to dip. If you're doing it for RP reasons then don't worry about it.

I mean, I don't really like improved twf all that much, but yeah. I was kinda looking forward to tracking abilities and stuff. Ah well. Next time. I know it doesn't matter for rp that I have redundant feats but it'll bug me to no end. Like. Stress me beyond wanting to play the character. I appreciate the info though.

You can also dual wield in armor, something the ranger feats do not allow (light armor or no dw)

Bt sure how new you are, but... if you're going high rogue levels, like the rogue build in the cookie cutters, you don't want to lose much rogue. Any dropped level loses certian grenades and other bonuses like the +enchantments on your attacks. You'll also want at least 10 levels in rogue to get the sword/dagger special Arelith free weapon feats if you're dual wielding. You at least have the ambidextry for that, which ranger doesn't give since it has its own class-specifc thing.

You'll be okay!

If you want to track people and spy on them or if you're even just wanting locate/stumble onto other adventurers whose tracks you come across that feat alone is worth the dip.

I'll never play a character without tracking

Like Beard said, I would say too. If you're playing a sneaky sort, Ranger is mandatory. The cookie cutter rogue build lacks in much mechanical flair, and simply focuses on damage output. 25 / 5, is a far better build, I would say. 25 rogue, and 5 ranger. Pickup the dual-wield feats like normal, the ranger is purely there (4 pre-epic) for an extra attack per round, discipline, tracks (and the lack thereof) along with a bonus epic feat on your 5th ranger level, for your last discipline dump. For this sort of thing, the duel-wield stuff that ranger would give you is irrelevant. It offers a lot more, to be well worth the dip.

I, too, struggle to know what is written in books without first reading them.
