What's the counter-play for Spellsword acid imbue?

Post by BegoneThoth » Wed Feb 14, 2018 6:15 pm

Seems to stack with itself and ramp up to 1000's of acid damage.

What's the counter-play? How do you fight this?

I believe ankheg crafted items provide over 50% acid immunity.

bug armor set?

edit; Ah it's 50% though, which isn't really too hot when the acid imbue stacks infinite. May give you 2 more rounds, because more time alive means more stacks, and 50% of a big number is still a big number.

Ankheg set, 70% acid immunity plus 10/- acid reduction. Look in tailoring.

Ankheg set's AC is also equivalent to +0 full plate and spellsword AB is healthy, so you're gaining DR against one specific imbue but losing AC and getting hit more times.

That's the counterplay. You have to lose AC if you want to not die to hundreds of acid damage.

Why does their acid imbue stack? Can someone explain in laymen's terms what's going on here?

When you proc an acid imbue it stacks with all others, leading to well over 200+ acid damage a round.

The counter to this is to equip about five pieces of acid resist gear, losing 5-10 AC and a ton of stats in the process, so you can hit 70% acid resist.

But you can counter your own tremendous loss of AC by just sitting in imp expertise, which you may as well be in as SS like to sit between 65-75 ac anyway.

It's not supposed to. It's a bug that the dev involved with spellsword hasn't had time to fix yet.

So the counter-play is a GoFundMe for Kirito's rent and bills, so he can focus on the more important things in life, like bug fixes and new features.

The counterplay is "same as it ever was"...

...Ancient Green Dragon.

*drops mike*

But sriously, wouldn't abusing this mechanic also be considered engaging in a known exploit and thus be subject to DM hammers, rpr-withering, etc.?

I didn't know it was unintended before now to be honest, I imagine most people using it in game are similarly unaware.

"I didn't know unlimited damage was unintended..."
...yeah, maybe less of a discussion here and more of a straightforward bug report?

Unaware about their own acid imbue damage numbers sky-rocketing into uncharted levels? Yeah, sure.

I dont think dragon shape is an example of fair counterplay here.

It's nearly infinite damage, but it's been this way a long time.

There's no way to avoid abusing it without just completely avoiding acid imbue. I don't think you can really call this the sort of malicious thing that should be DM hammered when all they're doing is using one of their class features.

A couple of quick things here:

1) This is known unintended behavior, but using it is definitely not an exploit. It's not done with the sort of malice that characterizes exploiting.

2) Kirito's time is limited. What he's aware of and what he's able to fix are two different things.

3) Even if Kirito were to have time right now to handle coding, there's a pretty sizable difference between noting that something is too strong and picking the right place for it to be. Settling this issue will also take time.

4) The balance issue here is actually a little overstated. While basically everyone involved in the process agrees that acid stacks too powerfully in PvP, calling it "infinite damage" is counterproductive hyperbole. So is calling it "thousands of damage". In order to hit 2000 damage (the lowest plural thousand, for those curious as to why I'm using that), you're looking at individual ticks for 17 damage, less 5 for the resistance, or 12 damage a tick. The highest tier acid imbue sticks around for 9 rounds. That's a 108 damage over time DoT spread out over 9 rounds. To hit 2k damage from acid imbue procs, an unlucky victim would need to get hit 19 times with a failed save. For most builds, this probably looks like taking on the close order of 40 hits. You're probably already dead for reasons completely unrelated to the acid imbue, if this is you.

Having used it in PvP a couple of times, I've never managed to get more than 3-4 stacks on a target. The fact that this is still 400ish incoming damage is definitely too much, but we really really don't need to cloud the issue with hyperbole.

From personal observation, acid is pretty underwhelming in PvE. Stuff that routinely fails the fort save basically doesn't ever have enough HP to make acid stacking worthwhile. Stuff that has huge piles of HP, by contrast, almost always makes the fort save.

5) BegoneThoth, you're wandering into the territory where you post hyperbolic rants instead of useful posts every time spellsword comes up. Consider the following:
a) It's known that spellsword is overtuned right now and needs nerfs.
b) All of the specific issues you post are already known about.
c) Other people have managed to provide a clear and objective analysis of the problems you've identified, which is more effective than, to date, 4 threads that you've popped in on to post something like: "Pls someone tell me how 2 cnter infint damage?????!!?!?", "SPELLSWORD NEEDS NERFS YESTERDAY! D4 HD! No BONUS DAMAGE! NO SPELLS ABOVE LEVEL 6! KIRITOS HEAD ON A SPIKE!"
d) Hosing a thread down with your hyperbole actually detracts from the input of people making rational and reasoned suggestions. In effect, your posts are getting in the way of the discussion.

In this light, I'm just going to ask you personally to refrain from posting on the topic of spellswords. If you do so again, I will delete your posts. We know how you feel, but how you've decided to communicate on this subject is not welcome.
