If it was a permanent divine essence, then they won't work together.

Re: Elder Dream Spear + permanent Essence
damage vs racial group/alignment don't get overwritten, everything else does by a permanent essence.
damage vs racial group/alignment don't stack with a normal essence. so 1d6 divine + 2d6 divine vs undead =2d6 divine vs undead
since the spear is runic (i think) you can enchant it with 1d4 in the basin without losing the 2d6 divine.

If you want to basin on extra damage, make sure you put your permanent essence on before enchanting. Essences remove previous elemental damages, but enchantments do not.

A little more specifically, is the hardest weapon in the game to get supposed to be so easily overwritten with an inferior essence?

Re: Elder Dream Spear + permanent Essence
Yes. Dont ever place a permanent Essence on a Elder Dream spear. there is no essence that is better then the +2d6 divine that is allready on the weapon.

Re: Elder Dream Spear + permanent Essence
So if something has 2d6 divine on it you still couldn't put say a 1d6 or +4 fire on it without overwriting the 2d6 divine?
Re: Elder Dream Spear + permanent Essence
Permanent Essences overwrite ANY OTHER ELEMENTAL ENCHANTMENT unless it is Vs race, vs alignment or any other vs condition. If its just flat elemental damage (which to be clear is all non physical damage) then it gets overritten
If you enchanted an item at a basin and put +1 damage on, it would overrite this just the same as a special item with 2d6 Divine damage.

Roleplay can define your characters actions but when you as a player have the ability to accept loss and understand that sometimes its better to let the other person win because it makes a better story - it is then that you become a good roleplayer.

Just to be clear:
Putting any permanent damage essence on The Elder Dream will replace the divine damage.

Re: Elder Dream Spear + permanent Essence
Just curious as I have seen gloves with 1d4 fire, cold, and positive energy on them. If I am understanding this correctly, shouldn't that be impossible?
Re: Elder Dream Spear + permanent Essence
That's done through the enchantment basin, not with essences.

Re: Elder Dream Spear + permanent Essence
As it was written... somewhere in the wiki:
Essences replace all elemental damage (except elemental vs alignment/race).
Basins only replace the damage if it's the same damage (1d4 divine would replace 2d6 divine), though in most cases it's a matter of a 5%, unless it's a runic item or a completely plain item.

Re: Elder Dream Spear + permanent Essence
Could you put a defensive essence on the spear and have it not wipe out the 2d6 damage?
Re: Elder Dream Spear + permanent Essence
You can, yes.
