Path of the True Flame

Since I'm new here and trying this class out I was looking at the Cookie Cutter build... it lists that you take GSF Conjuration , why is that?

You don't, not as a TF. The Evocation Sorcerer build is for Sorcerers who plan to take Evocation without the limitations of the Path of True Fire.

As for building for a TF, you have multiple ways to go with it! The most mechanically powerful dip (imo) is the Harper Mage dip for TFs. All the extra epic feats that can help with survivability.

But a few other popular choices can be paladin/blackguard, as well. Then you have the usual dips of bard or ranger.

Ah ok.

I'm actually enjoying the limitations, it is part of what made me want to try the class.

Not sure I can take Harper though, doesn't it need a Prestige token?

Indeed, being a Harper requires a token from the DMs, and that requires you to dedicate your RP to it.

Don't let that discourage you from trying out the more accessible dips such as Paladin or Blackguard though!

I have found if your character's ideals match with the Harper's lore-based aims, it's not terribly difficult to find yourself included in that vein of RP; depending on your usual playtime you may have a hard time finding a DM taking requests, but if you look around for a bit whilst RP'ing and don't find yourself able to be on at one of these times, I've found a polite request to the Active DM Group on the forums to arrange a time to discuss things when they'll be about works wonders.

Random question, but i was wondering if the True Flame blocked use of the Blackguard summoning. I know that lay on hands still works for paladins.

I could have sworn Fighter was a viable option for TFs as well for extra feats and Discipline, but maybe I'm mistaken.

Fighter's handy if you're going for an EDR build. It's probably one of the less painful ways to build a true flame - since you're relying on IGMS for your damage, and it really doesn't care about your spell DC. The hit points let you slap on elemental shield and be reasonably resilient, by caster standards.

No idea on whether or not blackguard summons work, mind you.

The trouble with TF is you are lobbing spells and it would be nice to hide behind someone. It makes for a great support toon as you can stand in the back and just do massive damage. But when you get mobbed, it is tough to get your AC up to keep you protected. If you had a demon summons it would make solo grinding and even pvp a bit easier.

That's sort-of the point of true flames. The damage output is terrifying, but they trade away a lot of general utility for it. Soloing is pretty tricky but sort-of doable by hiding in darkness, making use of AoE spells, and kiting using your summonable knife. It's not what I'd call an enjoyable experience, but it's possible.

In group PvP they're absolute powerhouses. That damage output ramps up very quickly - as long as you've got someone to help protect you.

They're hyper-specialised into that damage role. Unfortunately, that means you trade away a lot of other things.

While I'm reasonably certain that BG summons do work for True Flames, keep in mind that every level of BG you take early on delays your more powerful spells, and to get a BG summon powerful enough to tank for you in later levels requires a heavy (16+ level) BG investment... At which point, why even play a TF?

I want to say I remember irongron saying they dont like unlimited spells as a concept and that they were considering just disabling TF from being selected. I'm personally of the oppinion that's the best route. It's so linear, that while it may be novel for the first time player, there's not much beyond that.

I, too, struggle to know what is written in books without first reading them.
