How do spells on items work?

Post by Joheshua » Mon Oct 01, 2018 7:10 pm

For example if I had an item that has Haste on it, what are the mechanics surrounding its use? Is there a certain amount of charges or does it just always have the spell cast on me?

It allows you to cast the spell as if you had it in your book (even if your character couldn't usually cast spells). Either it's a #casts/day system or a #charges/casts system, where the item starts with a set number of charges and breaks once all the charges are used. When you see a parenthesis after a spell (eg Haste (5)) that means that Haste is being cast as a 5th level spell, so it'll last 5 rounds. To cast from an item, right click it and a radial menu should appear with things like "examine" and "drop", and will also include spells. You can quickslot it, too.

Casts/day are based on when your character rests rather than actual in game days. The item remains in the inventory (and also on the quickbar slot if assigned but will indicate the number of charges remaining per 'day')

Casts (or charges)/use means that when all such casts/charges are used the item will be consumed and destroyed. (the item will also disappear from the quickbar if assigned and you'll see a dialogue indicating Item Lost: -)

In cases where items have a combined cast/day and cast/use if the cast/use is used up the item will not be consumed.
How many casts depends entirely on the item itself. In some situations there are stronger versions of the same thing. But typically it's always a set amount per the item.

Also if you're trying to use an item on others and the cursor goes grey the cast will not function correctly, there are some items and objects that are self consumable only. If the cursor goes gold, the spell can be utilized.

Most items with spells will have 1 cast/day. A few have 2-3, and a handful have unlimited casts/day, with the spell on a cooldown.

Wands and other items that say charges/use, on the other hand, can be used unlimited times/day as long as they have charges left.

A correction on what I said: what I mean by a "5th level spell" is it's cast by a "5th level character". It doesn't refer to the spell's circle (ie 0-9) but instead the effective caster level (ie 1-30).
