Spellsword/Palemaster

Post by Senshi » Sun Jun 17, 2018 11:45 am

Hello,

Does a Spellsword/Palemaster lose the palemaster summons?

This is the blurb from the wiki:

"Their summoning restriction is absolute. All spells and abilities means all of them, even abilities that are not strictly summoning, like the druid's animal companion, the shadowdancer's shadow, or Mordenkainen's Sword spell. They are prevented from using these spells even from scrolls and other sources. Domination and charm abilities, however, work normally."

Just want to make sure.

Yes. Spellswords lose all summoning capabilities. And if there's something they CAN summon, that's a bug and should be reported.

I just want to chime in and say that a spellsword Pale Master is not as good as it might initially sound. In fact, it would be pretty terrible. You already get super high AC as a spellsword with Epic Mage Armor (which a PM also gets), and the crit immunity is not worth cutting into your spellsword levels and leaving yourself super dispellable.

Getting 10 PM (and thus crit immunity) also means losing greater imbue, which is a pretty key part of a spellsword's offense. Looking at PM, I can't say I see much mechanical reason to take it and SS.

The only circumstance is consider spellsword palemaster

21 wizard/4 palemaster/ 5fighter

4 palemaster gives 4 ac. Getting an extra ac per level isn't a bad trade. 4 fighter will help pre epic bab

5th lvl in epic allows for epic weapon specializing and another ac on ones armor.

I don't think the extra AC from fighter 5 would stack with EMA, and keep in mind that you're losing 3 AC by CCing tumble, so at the end of the day, the trade-off you're making is 1 AC and 4 damage for UMD.

And being thematic of course!

But as you point out, skill dumping is extremely viable for a high int character too. Just so i can be less ignorant, what are some examples where UMD will be hugely useful to a wizard? (i guess a spellsword could use UMD to do things like ranger or paladin scrolls).

I guess if you value UMD you need to choose between the extra damage vs the extra ac. Palemaster vs fighter if you wanted to incorporate bard.
