Warder

Post by kainshots » Thu Jan 11, 2018 10:47 pm

Ok, so you wonderful people helped out so much with my last idea i'm back for round two! This time I'm looking to make a mage who focuses mostly on defensive wards. Who's goal is to protect his family/home with the most powerful wards he can make. My thing is, I have 0 idea on how to build a wizard in nwn. i almost exclusivly play rogues or monks. I understand ESF Abjuration is a must for the idea but everything else i am lost on. No idea what to take, when to take it, what to pair with abjuration. So please help me one more time oh wise build guru's.

I think a cleric is more suited for what you seek. Or do you want your character to be a wizard?

Alrighty. Wizards are pretty straightforward to build. You'll want to start with around 17 INT (before gifts), with CON as your secondary stat. All stat points go into INT, and in the late epics I'd advise dipping either bard (or rogue, if you're a masochist for skills - though it'll leave you without discipline. Which is unfortunate.) or four levels of ranger (for extra epic spell foci using the favored enemy feats). Feel free to tweak it, but that's something like the general approach.

Feat wise, if you want that abjuration-y build; I'd go for ESF: Abjuration. You can pick up Arcane Defence too, if you're super eager to make your wards as resistant to dispels as possible but, in all honesty, as a 26 Wiz / 4 Ranger I've never found myself getting dispelled on the regular in PvE without it - which is mostly what you'll be doing, by the sound of it. You'll also want ESF: Transmutation, to get that wonderful +2 to your stat buff spells and the side benefits of making golems and being able to rip reality asunder with portals whenever you feel like it. I'd also consider maximise and/or empower spell. Empower's less reliable, but can push you to some reasonably impressive numbers on those stat buffs.

If the ESF: Transmutation works on items then Craft wand might be worth taking, just so you've got a pouch full of re-rolls if your initial buffs end up on ones and twos.

Just as a note, your usual mage'll aim for conjuration/evo, typically, to make EDK and Hellball work. You won't have quite the same power here, but I get the impression that's not what you're looking for.

As ever, Cortex's build guide is king.

Also, don't play a specialised wizard. Losing a spell school hurts, for the benefit it brings.
It's crooked, but it's the only game in town.

If you're not worried about having a few less spell DC's (which doesn't particularly matter in the caster meta) you can be a better wizard by following the above, stopping at 19/20 int, then using remaining points to pop con up.
Thankfully this team is no longer being used.
