Shevarash build

Post by Lost in the dark » Wed Sep 20, 2017 11:57 am

Looking for some build ideas on a wild elf Black Archer of Shevarash. Stealth is a must but also good damage and the ability to solo bits of the underdark would be great. Would also like playability all the way through the levels and not just at 30th. Was thinking of something like Ranger 21 / Fighter 4 / Arcane Archer 5 but appreciate no Tumble or UMD. Thoughts?

Lack of tumble is going to hurt your defenses significantly, and lack of UMD will really limit your drow hunting archer guy's ability to fight more magical opponents, which is the category a lot of drow fall into. That said, it could work for exploring the Underdark, but it looks like it lacks much means of keeping distance between itself and enemies, and lacks good defenses to survive once they get in close.

The stealth will be handy with wilderness HiPS, but the Underdark is strange about which areas are classified as wilderness and which ones aren't. HiPS will be very helpful where it works, but it probably won't work everywhere you will want it to.

If I'm not completely mistaken, one of the server's longest running black archers was actually doing a divine archer build. Arcane archer has some nice perks, but in most cases a cleric heavy divine archer will out perform them due to a full power line-up of cleric spells to fall back on in addition to strong ranged damage after prep time.

Weaknesses include a longer windup than Arcane archer stuff, as many cleric builds are with the multiple wards they rely on, and vulnerability to disjunctions/dispels.

There's a couple of ways to do it, but most that I'm familiar with go after Zen Archery to benefit from the high wisdom they'll have for their cleric levels, and a fair bit of CHA to support divine might. If you're going to follow Shevarash that restricts you to a non-lawful alignment, so no monk dip for a wisdom bonus to AC. Wild elf will be easier to manage it on, seeing as they don't have the CON penalty most elves suffer.

Having never played such a character myself, I think someone a little more knowledgeable of mechanics could offer better tuned versions of these:

Weapon Specialization, shorter wind-up:
Cleric 21/Rogue or bard 3/Fighter 6

Divine Grace (Lawful Good, wouldn't work for Shevarash but could for Corellon):
Cleric 23/Rogue or bard 3/Paladin 4

Dark Blessing (Evil, Shevarash is one of the few gods in the Seldarine to accept evil followers)
Cleric 23/Rogue or bard 4/blackguard 3
(Feats will be limited due to BG prerequisites and no bonus feat for elves)

Harper Paragon (Non-evil)
Cleric 21/Rogue or bard 4/Harper Scout 5
(Harper feat prerequisites will be made up for with free divine might/shield, but you'll need to cross-class either search or discipline to qualify for Harper Scout depending on whether you take bard or rogue levels.)

Are you looking more for a stealthy archer that follows sheverash? Or a Sheverashan that happens to be stealthy and uses a bow. The first implies (to me) an AA investment, the second is a bit more flexible.

Could suggest some ideas after having a better feel for what you want to be able to do. As a rule though AA isn't worth taking unless you're going a minimum of 9 levels in it

The high level concept is a vigilante with a hatred of the drow who stalks them to their very door. Stealthy so he can not get murdered whilst stalking his pray and ranger for the favoured enemy flavour. The bow was optional but Black Archer concept felt a bow would kind of make sense.

Slightly off-topic, but:

You can play a Shevarite. That's fine. But be mindful of whether what your character does will create fun for the other players. As always, it's largely a matter of how you go about it. E.g., are you taking your high-level Shevarite to UD areas where lower-level drow players grind, and killing them? Even if you follow the rules of engagement, something like this will be decidedly un-fun for everyone except you. Remember that behind those meanie drow are human beings who are also trying to enjoy the game.

Not that I'm saying you'll do this.

So, now that you know that with great power comes great responsibility, generally speaking, Bane of Enemies does not favor ranged builds. Your best bet is to take 19 AA levels.
Some builds I've worked on (not recommended):
Charisma Battlecleric
"E-Dodge Brycer"

It's not popular but a great thematic build is Ranger 6/AA 19/SD 5. You get a nice high AB, nice base damage, HiPS and nice stealth bonuses. Definitely take the ranger path for free bundles of arrows. Your arrows are more important than your build TBH, having access to them is going to save so much time and gold!

RP only starts at 30 if you're a coward.
