As someone who currently plays a low level bard with a high level of DwD, I can assert that you don't actually need the spellbook. Only few of the bard spells are worth it, to wit: Haste, Mass haste, War cry, and Displacement. Practically everything else can be used off of a wand. There's even an instrument that gives Mass haste once per day. Improved invisibility does the same as Displacement, although it gets removed by Invisibility purge, but that isn't terribly common.

Without UMD and full access to Tumble you will have lots of trouble late-game. Might I suggest one of the following:
-9/18/3 Fighter/DD/Rogue (go for 21 con and EDR III)
-5/5/20 Rogue/Fighter/CoT (go Gold Dwarf for the charisma bonus).
-23/4/3 Paladin/Fighter/Rogue (Gold Dwarf)
-23/4/3 Fighter/Paladin/Rogue (Again, Gold Dwarf)
PDK builds are another option, although it really doesn't go that well with Dwarven Defender. You're feat starved and thus won't have room for EDR III. Although you can still go 6/10/14 Rogue or Bard/PDK Protector/DD and be rather tanky.
