Ranger

Post by Liareth » Mon Feb 15, 2016 8:51 pm

Rangers on Arelith gain the ability to speak animal language (-an).

Two paths are available to new ranger characters: the archer, and the sniper. A third path, totem ranger, can be taken in-game at a later time with any ranger character (this is stackable with the other two paths).

The ranger must worship a nature deity in order to gain access to nature-based spells (this includes all ranger spells not found on the cleric spell list).

Rangers can examine tracks left by other characters to determine information about their direction of travel and the weight class of their armor.

Rangers have access to the -track command, which gives information about what monsters spawn in an area and the state of balance in the area. This ability improves with number of ranger levels.

If the character takes at least 3/4 of their levels in the ranger class, then animals dominated through the use of Animal Empathy will be converted into henchmen. A ranger may have 2 animal henchmen and one other animal, for a total of 3 followers.

On Arelith, the ranger class serves as a prerequisite for the arcane archer prestige class in the place of the arcane caster requirement (other requirements still apply).

Rangers on Arelith gain 6 skill points per level. They gain the skillpoints after taking the level, so they get to actually use the extra 2 that they get the next level. This is due to a mechanical limitation of the engine.

The following abilities are gained at the specified levels:
6th - +1 AC when dual-wielding
7th - Woodland Stride
9th - Evasion
14th - +2 AC when dual-wielding (replaces earlier bonus)
21st - Hide in Plain Sight while in nature areas

It doesn't affect examining of tracks or -investigate, no, but it does affect -track. I'll add that in.

If you aren't seeing it on Tryn, it might not apply to existing Rangers.

Rangers don't get Dodge for free, half-elves do.

When a ranger removes a hench-animal, should it always disappear with the *wanders off* emote? I've had a few stick around without disappearing and can't find an answer in any official descriptions of the AA or Ranger abilities.

It has been my experience that a creature that would usually be neutral towards your Ranger (blue) will *Wander off* when you release it from the empathy-domination/Henchman... where a creature that is aggressive towards your Ranger (red) will stick around when you release it.

That being said... just because the creature 'is' red when you apply the empathy, doesn't mean it will stick around. I've found that creatures that are ALWAYS red when you come upon them and you -never- see them blue... ever... those are the ones that don't *wander off*

Now... at what level of Animal Empathy bonus does a creature that was 'always' red become 'usually' or 'always' blue? That I haven't been able to determine.

Them's my findings through trial and error. -I've got a lowbie Ranger in the works, who's Empathy skill is 13 right now. I'll try to pay attention as skill increase begins and try and collect more data on the critters that wander off and those that don't.
