As far as I have been told, this was implemented at a time and day when the function wouldn't display the name, and certainly couldn't literally replace the Character's name.
You'd literally just see:
Achuak'iejir Stormwind (Disguised)
-if I was to wear a disguise; instead of, say;
Dark-Armored Woman (Disguised)
Nowadays, it just leads to needless instances and excuses for the metagame of a well-thought out guise (and - subsequently - reduces the importance of a well-thought out guise, since people are gonna act different around you/roll spot-checks incessantly by virtue of what they see anyway)
Add to the layer of mystery some! Remove those bloody tags.

Re: Remove (Disguised) next to Disguised PCs
We're not removing the (Disguised) tag, sorry. The tag is there so that players know OOCly they are interacting with a disguised character. This is important as it helps to inform roleplay and acts as a reminder that players should continue to regularly examine the character to represent their character's passive observation.
While, naturally, some problem players will abuse this, the same players would still abuse it without the (Disguised) tag by checking your player name. If players are metagaming your disguises, report them! That is why we have DMs.
