Rangers and Lore

We will file suggestions here that did not make the cut. Don't expect detailed responses, but the most common reasons are:
- implementing the suggestion is impractical, or too much work for the gain
- the suggestion is thematically against our design philosophy
- the suggestion is too detailed/low-level
Keep your suggestions broad and focused on RP benefits, please, not detailed suggestions of how to tweak X class.

Rangers and Lore

Post by The Kriv » Wed Nov 01, 2017 2:40 am

It would be really tremendous IMO, if Arelith's Rangers became the sort of class that other PC's actively sought out for very specific reasons, that could be tied in with the Favored Enemy characteristics.

Maybe a good mix would be to invest in the "Lore" skill, where skill-points invested in LORE somehow stack with attack and damage versus a Ranger's Favored Enemy in a way that is similar to a Paladin's Smite-Evil.

The Ranger's investment in LORE skill is translated into his/her study of his/her favored enemy. The KNOWLEDGE of that favored enemy.

Lore Skill Points (Enchants not counted) / 3 = to-hit bonus added to Favored Enemy and Lore Skill Points added as Bonus Damage. Giving the Fully invested lvl 30 character with Ranger Levels +10 to hit a Favored Enemy, but and an extra +33 to damage it (with a x2 crit giving +66, x3 giving +99)
Make this a cooldown/activated attack much the same way a paladin's Smite Evil. Offering # of uses per day = Ranger Class Level / 3

-this could work in favor of Dip-Rangers for their one or two favored enemies, but also work well for dedicated rangers as well.

The Lore points could stack as a soft bonus with "Listen" and "Spot" vs Favored Enemies as well, giving Rangers with full Lore Investment a +33 bonus to spot/listen vs their favored enemies... again, works for Dip-Ranger classes who could have this against their one or two favored enemies.

Basically, the Ranger as a class is built around the Ranger have expertise in tracking down, and KILLING those creature-types that he/she has chosen to be Favored Enemies.

-it's a Favored ENEMY, not a Favored "Target"... an ENEMY. This implies not some sort of DISLIKE but GREAT PREJUDICE.

Make the Rangers TRULY the BANE of some creature-types.
Make them be the Terror of those creature types, to where other PC's will literally fear going up against a Ranger PC. Or having a Ranger PC in your party with a specialization in a particular Racial type is REALLY Beneficial... like having to choose between weapon-master or Ranger, you would choose the Ranger.

Where Rangers with "undead" as their Favored Enemies can cut down Pale-Master PC's like a hot knife through warm butter.

Hoo boy this looks horrifically broken.

At any rate, we already have plans for rangers.
