UMD and Dispelling

We will file suggestions here that did not make the cut. Don't expect detailed responses, but the most common reasons are:
- implementing the suggestion is impractical, or too much work for the gain
- the suggestion is thematically against our design philosophy
- the suggestion is too detailed/low-level
Keep your suggestions broad and focused on RP benefits, please, not detailed suggestions of how to tweak X class.

UMD and Dispelling

Post by The Rambling Midget » Wed Sep 10, 2014 7:38 am

For the purpose of dispel resistance, magical effects gained from magical devices through the use of UMD have a caster level equal to the sum of a character's levels which have UMD as a class skill.

For example:
A 25 Bard/5 Fighter has a caster level of 25.

A 20 Fighter/7 WM/3 Rogue has a caster level of 3.

A 16 Rogue/9 Assassin/5 Fighter has a caster level of 25.

I'd say see how these buffs hold up in PvE first with the new greater dispel, which is quite common amongst caster mobs. I suspect mundanes will already find themselves highly dispellable when adventuring in level appropriate areas without the extra help, which will likely be the biggest impact of the decap.

Unrelated.

This is to address the nonsensical dispel resistance disparity between half-casters and mundanes. In fact the Greater Dispel change makes the situation infinitely worse.

Characters that shouldn't have any dispel resistance now have a small chance of being dispelled while characters with a relatively great deal of magical experience will be stripped of everything, in most cases.

It's not possible to set dispel DCs pass what the game already sets them to, for specific spells.

You can add some resistance (or take some away) to all spells on a target no matter their the source. Such as how arcane defense works, +2 resistance against all dispel checks no matter who cast the spell upon you or it's caster level or the casting method. Actually.. I'm not even sure if arcane defense makes you harder to dispel or if it just sets what caster levels are immune to dispel to two lower.

That is without rewriting how dispelling works completely.
