the history board is among a group of boards in the Grove Treehouse, which I try to visit when I remember, mostly to keep an eye on the fixtures that are there in hopes to notice when they disappear so they can be replaced...

unfortunately, when the board containing the Archdruid-History was noticed, it was after a time of over a month that I'd been up there... no telling when that sucker was removed(or broken) and it was the ONLY thing missing (that I can tell) *shrugs* we recently had a board go missing from the Ranger Cabin... message board theft/destruction is just a fact of life for {Heartwood Grove} fixtures.

well.... at least we're recognized as local gnolls now instead of UD races :D

seriously though destroying fixtures is the last thing I consider, usually I will steal them and leave notes saying why, and if I had seen relevant historical information on it, I would have left this one alone ooc'ly and probably just made off with your wolvesbane plant... that admittedly I've been eyeing for a while now

well I suppose what you consider 'relevant information' is all relative. 8-)

all the same... that particular board is used to record the passing of events, announcements and such. as well as to indicate the cabin is in regular use and not an abandoned collection of fixtures waiting to be poached because folk thing it is abandoned.

My apologies that the messages posted upon it were so IC aggravating it warranted its destruction.

I think in that cabin-location, I've had that message board replaced at least every other month in the last year.

Maybe it's time we got a DM on board to sprinkle some magic DM-Dust to make that board-fixture a PLOT item.

Agreed, my apologies about its destruction, ill avoid message boards in the future without making sure first. I personally know how it feels to have things destroyed constantly, and theft has more opportunity for fun

Or, perhaps don't use boards for death threats to violent, short tempered animals!

Don't make threats to gnolls, make fur coats from gnolls.

oddly, that was basically the threat that got the gnolls to pay attention, though I think it was a rug, and not a coat

Can't put a price on a good gnoll fur rug.

Re: Heartwood Grove TIMELINE

by caldura firebourne
probably could... I mean if you based price on the difficulty to gather the hide and the amount of work you would have to put in to actually make it, price would vary depending on which gnoll you had to kill for it and how many times you had to mar the hide to get it to go down

a deer pelt is worth a lot of money, unless you put fifteen holes in it cause you can't aim

and usually deer don't charge you down when you shoot at them...

You'd be surprised, I know I was

You'd think being friendly to a monster that looks at you like a prime cut of beef would raise some red flags but more often than not people are very nice towards the gnolls, often past the point of fear or respect

Its refreshing to be treated as a monster from time to time

Timeline

? AR. Foundation of the Grove

~14 AR [WAR] The grove was attacked during the second sharran war. (On Kaeyrn or Dacey's tenure)

~ 10th AR [POL] Throughout Dacey's leadership, her policy was absolute neutrality concerning island politics. This may come from her close friendship to certain members of Stonehold.

During this time, the forest was mostly peaceful, though the western areas were assaulted by malarites.

~17 - 19 AR [WAR] Zeer, Cameo and their followers began attacking the grove. The grove more or less ignored the Cameo/Zeer/Sharran issue until the grove got torched and the dryads/Clarissa were killed. That's more or less what drew the grove into the conflict. This all happened while Wilm was Archdruid.

[POL] Not much happened during Wilm's tenure, but Nalee remained as archdruid for much longer, despite being Malarite. Under her leadership, she helped solidify a strong grove membership, leading to such prominent members as Spike Dy'ner and the tiefling, Arazima. It was mainly during Nalee's time as archdruid that the forest was plagued by giant termites. They were only pushed back after many many years of effort. Despite this, bugbears soon spread through parts of the forest, coming from the Crystal Caves.

~58 AR [PHE] the Talona/Beshaba portion of the grove made a blight and unleashed it on Cordor in an effort to "Cull". The plague effort manifested itself in the form of diseased cloth items and carrier vermin. The plague was finally countered.

88 ~89 AR [POL] Navira ended her first tenure as Archdruid — Kregor was currently a squire to a The Broken Circle, a homage to the Forsworn, and introduced by his Knight, Sir Caelyn, to Navira on the day of her departure for the mainland for a sojourn.

89 to 94 AR [POL] Yana (Mother Bear) became Archdruidess from that point until the coup attempt by Cassima.

94 AR [POL] Cassima (who was never officially instated as Archdruidess) made an attempted coup of the Heartwood — during the flood crisis in the Underdark. She sought to take advantage of the crisis, and plotted the coup, citing the Heartwood for inaction, and initially approached the Bramble Watch as allies. Kregor rejected her proposition, with the support of the whole of the faction. Cassima' allies in the power grab included the Malarite Tamarie; and the Black Archer Asherrin La'farra.

Cassima's "claim" to the title lasted less than two months, between one (impromptu) moot, where she said "I am Archdruid now," and shed the blood of a dissenter to her claim, and a second moot where both the Bramble Watch and Heartwood factions convened to officially name the new Archdruid. Mila was the initial pick of Yana as an appointment, but the resounding voice from the Bramble Watch called for Navira to resume her position. She was so named, and Yana officially stepped down from the title.

Cassima was conspicuously absent from this moot, and rumors spread that she had met an untimely end at the hand of some unknown circumstance, though none of the rumors were ever confirmed.

AR99, a Drow druid named Wicket Witherdusk appeared in the Heartwood Grove, asking for admittance, claiming she only wished to live in peace and to be part of a "family" again. At first, admitted and welcomed by the Ranger Orion Stormwood, under the guise that Wicket could be part of the Grove if she maintained and kept to the laws and traditions of the Grove but later withdrawn after a pattern of violence and noncooperation by Wicket. Wicket was eventually spurned by the Grove, save for three Rangers: Yuri Evergreen and two of the four elven brothers of the Ninaste family. A terrible conflict resulted in the deaths first of Mila Lane and then Orion Stormwood (whose spirit was discovered 10 years later wandering the Plane of Death by the elven archmage, Daijin.) Known as "The Druid-Abomination" for cutting off her feet to magically graft talons of a harpy to the end of her legs, Wicket eventually succumbed to madness, taking her own life, and the three Rangers who supported her, Yuri and the two Ninaste Brother, cast out of the Grove and exiled for life from Myon.

~102 AR: After the death of Mila Lane during the occupation of the Heartwood by the aforementioned druid-harpy-abomination, Wicket Witherdusk, Navira stepped down as Archdruid and returned to the mainland, choosing Xarina Moonstalker as her successor. Xarina was unanimously accepted as the next Archdruid, but like many Archdruids before, Xarina disappeared from Arelith.

In the absence of an Archduid, the Senior Heartwood Rangers, Orion Stormwood, took over the running of the Heartwood until a new Archdruid could be named.

110 AR: For 7 years Stormwood managed the Heartwood until a druid-apprentice to Mila and Navira, Clara Ders, who had come into her own as a high-level Druid, was named archdruid by a small gathering of druids and rangers.

~ 112 AR - Clara served as Archdruid during a difficult time where the Heartwood Grove came into direct conflict with Guldorand, under the leadership of mayor Memmorath Mer'sham, a former Banite. Memmorath made a trade deal with Amn to deliver 30,000 units of raw logged lumber to Amn. The intense logging required to meet the deal caused a great stir on the slopes of the mountains of the Skull Craigs. In response to the heavy logging, the aggressive Sky-Talker druids attacked Guldorand, who responded first by attacking the Mountain camp of the Sky Talker druids, slaying every Druid, causing the genocide of the entire tribe of Sky Talkers (Save a few small children who Guldorand took in as wards to raise). Second, forces from Guldorand slashed the trees around the Mountain Grove and then attacking and killed all the Dryads of those trees. With the Trees slashed, the Dryads were unable to flee to the safety of the trees. The Dryads were all killed, save a single Dryad, who escaped, but was mortally wounded. The sole surviving Dryad of the Mountain Grove, mortally wounded but still alive, was carried by a Treant to the Heartwood. Archdruidess, Clara Ders, Senior Rangers Orion Stormwood and Simon del Solis, and a young Druid of Kossuth, Lomir, tried to heal her wounds but they were too severe. Her last breaths, a to plea to the Heartwood as she lay on the ground, in the arms of Orion Stormwood. The last dryad of the mountain grove perished on the floor of the Heartwood Grove's cavern after speaking her final words, "The power of the animal and of the plant are all but broken. The power of the stone remains, but not for long. Spread the word. Avenge our deaths.".

The Dryads of the Heartwood Grove, the ones often found dancing around the Heartwood's binding Heartstone, went into a rage, and danced a war-dance of revenge against Guldorand that continued un-ending for two straight months. When the day came for Guldorand to deliver the raw logged lumber to the Amnish barge, Heartwood Grove members stood in opposition. Among those in attendance were the Heartwood Grove's Archdruidess, Clara Ders. The Heartwood attempted to disable the Barge to prevent its departure, but Amnish fought back and the barge was sunk due to incidental damages incurred by the battle between the Amnish and the Grovers.

The upon the word of a traumatized surviving Amnish child that washed up on shore, the reformed Banite Mayor of Guldorand held a trial convicting the Archdruidess, Clara Ders of murder, carrying a punishment of death. The Archdruidess, Clara Ders was executed by hanging.

Sometime after this, the Grove, without an Archdruid, floundered. The efforts of Senior Ranger, Simon del Solis, managed the Heartwood Grove (as many rangers before him had) during the years the Heartwood was without an Archdruid. After Simon's death, another non-druid took over the managing of the Heartwood, named Tadala, Known also as "Grove Mother."

-127 AR: Tadala abdicated at the naming of the Archdruid, Jantira Kal'luran

It might be good to include a disclaimer that specifies that this is one version of events and shouldn't be considered accurate/complete IG history for any players that might not know.

History is written by the victors.

I think this sort of thing should really be kept track of IC though, as it certainly provides a massive amount of RP for characters who are interested in local histories. Particularly for druids, who typically have oral traditions of passing on their histories.

/agree. but, this is written as a record for Ranger/Druid/Heartwood RP, I think it should be factual but offer some perspective OF a Ranger/Druid.
a Drow druid named Wicket Witherdusk appeared in the Heartwood Grove, asking for admittance, claiming she only wished to live in peace and to be part of a "family" again. At first, admitted and welcomed by the Ranger Orion Stormwood, under guise that Wicket could be part of the Grove if she maintained and kept to the laws and traditions of the Grove but later withdrawn after a pattern of violence and uncooperation by Wicket. Wicket was eventually spurned by the Grove, save for three Rangers: Yuri Evergreen and two of the four elven brothers of the Ninaste family. A terrible conflict resulted in the deaths first of Mila Lane and then Orion Stormwood (who's spirit was discovered years later wandering the Plane of Death by the elven archmage, Daijin.) Known as "The Druid-Abomination" for cutting off her feet to magically graft talons of a harpy to the end of her legs, Wicket eventually succumbed to madness, taking her own life, and the three Rangers who supported her, Yuri and the two Ninaste Brother, cast out of the Grove and exiled for life from Myon.
This all happened. It may be interpreted by the reader 10+ different ways based on the reader's memories of things, but it is a basic bullet-point outline of what happened and some fallout. Three rangers were indeed spurned by the Grove and exiled by Myon for their support of Wicket.
After the death of Mila Lane during the occupation of the Heartwood by the aforementioned druid-harpy-abomination, Wicket Witherdusk, Navira stepped down as Archdruid and returned to the mainland, choosing Xarina Moonstalker as her successor. Xarina was unanimously accepted as the next Archdruid, but like many Archdruids before, Xarina disappeared from Arelith.
This happened and was a major landmark in the Grove's timeline, to the point this is how some characters measure how long they've been a part of the Grove.

.
Clara served as Archdruid during a difficult time where the Heartwood Grove came into direct conflict with Guldorand, under the leadership of mayor Memmorath Mer'sham, a former Banite.
This happened. interpretation is left to the reader. it could be argued that Memmorath's association with the Banites could be omitted, but IMO, it puts things into perspective.
Memmorath made a trade deal with Amn to deliver 30,000 units of raw logged lumber to Amn. The intense logging required to meet the deal caused a great stir on the mountains slopes of the Skull Craigs. In response to the heavy logging, the aggressive Sky-Talker druids attacked Guldorand
A DM story arc that resulted in a DM event: The attack by the Sky Talker Druids. Boilded down to three sentences.
{...Guldorand} responded first by attacking the Mountain camp of the Sky Talker druids, slaying every Druid, causing the genocide of the entire tribe of Sky Talkers (Save a few small children who Guldorand took in as wards to raise).
I think it was very neutral to add that Guldorand spared what they considered innocents. I think it's fair to say that the Sky-Talkers that have appeared back on the Skull Craigs today are the a result of the fact that Guldroand saved some children, who grew up, and some returned home to re-populat the Sky-Talkers that are there today.
Second, forces from Guldorand slashed the trees around the Mountain Grove, and then attacking and killed all the Dryads of those trees. With the Trees slashed, the Dryads were unable to flee to the safety of the trees. The Dryads were all killed, save a single Dryad, who escaped, but was mortally wounded. The sole surviving Dryad of the Mountain Grove was carried by a Treant to the Heartwood, where she was attempted to be saved by some Archdruidess, Clara Ders, Senior Rangers Orion Stormwood and Simon del Solis, and Druid of Kossuth, Lomir. Unfortunately, the wounds of the Dryad were too severe and she perished on the floor of the Heartwood Grove's cavern. The Dryad's last words were a plea to the Heartwood members to avenge the mountain grove and the killing of the Muntain Grove's Dryads.

The Dryads of the Heartwood Grove, the ones often found dancing around the Heartwood's binding Heartstone, went into a rage, and danced a war-dance of revenge against Guldorand that continued un-ending for two straight months.
This happened first as a DM'ed event, and the module was altared for the Dryads to do thier war dance.
There are TONS of details left out of this account. It is bare bones. I tried to write it in the way a neutral news-agency wire story would appear. X happend. Y people showed up to oppose it Z happened as a result. -any interpretation in this is on the part of the reader. any 'intent' by the participants has been omitted so what is included is representational of unbiased events. X happend with Y participants which resulted in Z.
The hanging of an archdruidess of the Grove IMO is a significant milestone in the Grove's history. All the little details have been stricken. Eye-witness accounts of what happened from each side are too conflicting in point of view to include. Evidence collected at the scene (snake-bite wounds, etc..) is all circumstantial and subject to interpretation. What is not subject to interpretation? That a child survived and that child's testimony was used to convict the archdruid. the punishment was death by hanging. The punishment was carried out. as above X event happened, Y people were involved, resulting in Z. Brief and factual. Interpretation is subject to the reader.

I hope this doesn't turn into a debate on the pillars of journalism, but we can workshop this together to make it as objective as possible, without specifically damming anyone's actions, but maintain this as a history timeline of the Heartwood.

Thanks for y'alls feedback!

There was actually a council of three that led the Heartwood between Clara and Tadala. A moot was called by Amalair Alenin, a priestess of Eldath. After much discussion, a council was decided to be formed to be the voice of the Grove for a time. The three were Amalair Alenin, Hannah Narengawa, and Buppi.

During this time, the grove decided to oust Clara Ders as a blighter for her involvement in the Crags. As well, a focus was put into seeing the Crags not slip into a worse state with various plans and a few rituals of cleansing. Issue arose when Hannah's faith in Malar caused her to act violently, and the council of three dissipated. Tadala stepped forward shortly after.

I feel the same way. There was a general agreement among the original contributors here that we'd leave out "modern history" and focus our efforts on compiling impossibly old knowledge that could no longer be obtained IC. This was never really supposed to be an up-to-date, running record of all names and events, which discourages actual IC historical efforts.

These are the names and dates given to me by The Kriv, regarding the line after Jantira. I'm not sure of their accuracy, aside from Beryl Whitestorm's date. Adding for the sake of keeping it going. It would be good to find a way to do this in-game without it being stolen/destroyed.

(132 AR) Xellree
(137 AR) Vrin Y'ladda
(140 AR) Lilah Lannald
(141 AR) Beryl Whitestorm

Edit: I've also got some history from Nalee Darin's player that states that Delith came before Clarissa. We can go with there being IC dispute on who came first.

Their records also show a "Merdock Took" in between Anaron and Kaeryn.
