The Teddy Bear Rebellion

It takes them.

One by one.

Night after night.

With the fifth night's passing, they gather. Some speak of fleeing to their old home where such a thing does not exist. Others speak of hiding and waiting for its inevitable passing. One whispers of fighting back but is quick to rescind as shining beady eyes fall upon her. As opinions go unsupported the discussion turns cacophonous until a single, haggard, cough silences the gathering.

Steiff, his right ear patched by mismatched cloth and his fluff all but gone stands among his fellow teddies with head raised. His eyes, long clouded, look towards the foot of the bed where simple white sheets were left to wave in the evening wind. Some join Steiff, others avert their gaze, and one begins to cry. No one stops her.

The wind falters, the sheets drift to rest, and there it stands to await the coming night. Gargantuan in size. Its edges trimmed by brass, studs embedded into its body, and strips of crimson ripped from its face to expose the dark walnut beneath. A large iron lock, fed through its lips, keeps the beast's maw closed for a time. A short time. As the sun's last breath gives life to the moon's light the beast speaks.

A low, guttural sound, as if the metal were scraped slowly against a rock, is proceeded by a faint, click. The lock falls. The brass edging screeches as the maw opens wide and from within the darkness, the teddies hear them. The lost. Familiar voices call out towards the teddies but no one calls back, no one speaks, no one makes a sound. Bang! The teddies turn in on themselves, cover their ears, avert their eyes, but again and again, the beast's maw is slammed shut. Bang! Bang! Bang!

Then nothing.

And nothing.

Bang!

With the sixth night's passing the teddies gather. No one speaks of fleeing to the old home where such a thing does not exist. None speak of hiding and waiting for its inevitable passing. And none speak of fighting back; the time for words has ended.

Steiff stands among his fellow teddies with a thimble upon his head. Bottle caps are their shields, toothpicks make their blades, and a flag bearing six stitches is their banner.

This is the beginning of the Teddy Bear Rebellion.
