The Song book of Kerri Larenthanil

Post by Sing for the Laughter » Tue Mar 27, 2018 5:30 am

As a member of the Harmonious Order of Milil, one thing that I'm tasked with is to write songs of my exploits during my time in service with the Order.

Thus, this is exactly that.

Orginal works by me!

Hope you enjoy.

The Love in his Soul

Contralto Style

He was a jaded soldier.
In service to everyone but himself.
A light long assaulted by the darkness.
War only takes and never gives back.

Words were not spoken,
Only pain in the eye.
Memories to be forgotten,
But I see the love in his soul.

What is the worth of a soldier without war?
What does one fight when the enemies have been defeated?
His memories.
His memories are his biggest foe.

Words were not spoken,
Only pain in the eye.
Memories to be forgotten,
But I see the love in his soul.

Is the darkness overpowering?
Or can the light shine through?
He reaches for the light in others.
Shields the darkness from smothering the light.

Words were not spoken,
Only pain in the eye.
Memories to be forgotten,
But I see the love in his soul.
--I see the light in his soul.

Singer’s notes:

I’ve been spending a bit of time with a man by the name of Sir Berenor Silver-Wind, one of my fellow Radiant Heart members. He’s been teaching me of some of the things that I’ve not experienced, such a war, and he seems quite content in helping others even if he is not as capable as he once was.

With a few artistic liberties, I’ve written the song about a man who’s been in wars, had to come to terms with the things that he’s seen, and how he’s adjusting to his life afterwards. When speaking with him, even though he seems to hold some pain in his eyes, I can see the light and love that’s deep down.

Of Changes

Contralto Style, accompanied by lute instrumental

Scenes of long ago, warm in one’s mind,
Visions of shadows that shine.
Til one day he returned and found they were the,
Victims of the ebb and flow, of changes.

Seasons changes, but the vileness remains
A glimmer of hope in the distance.
More sent to act as agents of the Gods.
The universe ablaze, of changes.

Shield to shield, a bonds developed in battle,
Share in a memory of glory;
Wander through the realms, dream of a cleansing.
That I sing, of changes.

Swords of sanctity will glow in the night,
Divine Might, Holy Vengeance and Celestial Judgement.
But when the morning breaks evil is swept away by,
The golden drops of dawn, of changes.

Our tears will be trembling, now we're somewhere else,
A final cup of wine to remember the virtuous left on the realm.
And I'll kiss you one more time, and leave you on,
The rolling shores, of changes.

Singer’s notes:

I met a Knight of the Radiant Heart, named Azrael, a few days back and we took a trip into the Orclands to cleanse the area of the evil that resides there. The trip made me consider things from his perspective, or anyone who returns to the island after a good deal of time. When that happens, most of whom one knew would be gone, but there would always be someone in their place.

With that idea in my mind, I considered the risks that one would take to develop love with other members of the Order and the effect that it would have on their lives. Ultimately, one's life in the battle against evil is on a shorter timeline than most. Eventually, someone will lose their life and be forced to say goodbye.

I do not believe that all songs of death need to be sombre and I wished to compose this piece to show that even in death, there can be joy—joy of the change that someone left on this realm.

I personally love this song you did for Berenor and in a way you basically captured him in the song which is really nice. I hope you will put more lines to this song for it is truly amazing.

(btw this is Berenor :D)

A Life with You

Soubrette Style, accompanied by lute instrumental

A touch of vulnerability. A story hidden away in your eyes.
Comforting, cunning, and studying all the same.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then yours are hard to appraise.
A million words? And all I want to start with is your name.

Trust me.
I won’t let you turn away.
Trust me.
We’ll stay by each other’s side.

I can’t help myself. The way I feel.
Don't know how you did this to me.
The trepidation in your eyes was hard to conceal.
You must have felt it too. Right?

Trust me.
I won’t let you turn away.
Trust me.
We’ll stay by each other’s side.

A gaze stuck in my head. Overprinted on every thought.
Misty waterfalls bury golden strands of hair.
Clouds hide a face with warmth that is blessed by the gods.
Moonlight sculpts shadows of two becoming one.

Trust me.
I won’t let you turn away.
Trust me.
We’ll stay by each other’s side.

Love or Lust? I’m not sure
Why?
Because…
I wanna do real ‘bad’ things with you.

Singer’s notes:

As is usual, today's song is written with inspiration from someone I spent a good deal of time conversing with. We had a connection and my thoughts drifted into the 'what-if', which, honestly, as should anyone who's caught in a bought of inspiration!

From there, my thoughts then developed into an idea of two people catching each other's eye from across a market and the reflection that one can fall into on that missed connection. Then, in the end, I turned the whole idea of a connection of love at first sight into the place were most minds tend to drift: lust. I'm sure the ending will get a rise out of the crowds!

Alara, My Girl

Informal style, 'sea shanty', to be sung to rally crew

Were you ever in logging Guldorand Crags?
[crew] Never again!
Ol’poor men, never again; sailing with a lass who ne'er lags.
[crew] Haul Away, Haul Away!

Wake up Privateer and don't look so glum,
[crew] Never again!
At homeward bound, you'll be drinking hot rum.
[crew] Heave Away, Heave Away!

The Bitch Queen howls all the day long,
[crew] Going about!
And Frostmaiden’s breath, it does blow so strong.
[crew] Heave Away, Heave Away!

We're outward and bound for Sencliff Bay,
[crew] Pulling like mad men all the way!
Get bending, me boys, it's a hell of a way,
[crew] Heel Away, Heel Away!

O wake her, O shake her,
[crew] O shake that girl ‘til her sails full mast.
Capt'n Alice bellows for us to spur!
[crew] Sencliff bores away at last!

Alara, my girl, saves the day!

Singer’s notes:

I've had the chance to travel with a woman by the name of Alice Scarlett-Highfen, a faithful of Sune. She's taken to a life as a privateer (among other things!) so I researched some songs from the sea and came across an interesting type called a 'sea shanty'. Shanties are work songs that are often used on the square-rigged ships like the Alara. Their rhythms are designed to coordinate the efforts of the crews hauling on lines.

So, this is my version of a sea shanty in honour of the Alara. I hope it does her justice!

Cordor I Love You, But You’re Breaking My Heart.

Somber, performed with lute, slight increase in tempo throughout

Cordor I love you, but you’re breaking my heart.
Cordor, I love you, but you’re breaking my heart.
Like a shop in the Squares.
Selling low-quality wares.
Cordor I love you, but you’re breaking my heart.

Cordor, you're perfect and I love to pass through,
But I can’t help and wonder when’s the next coup.
Laws are never the same,
They change through the flame.
To the Guards who once thought they knew what to do.

Cordor, you're chaos, oh, please don’t change a thing.
A man sits on the throne convinced he’s a king.
So Amn can collect.
I mean all disrespect.
Oh, I wonder when we’re told we can’t sing.

Cordor, I love you, but you're wearing me down.
Even those of good intent are run of town.
A prayer on the street,
As means for deceit.
But you're still the one place I'd happily drown.

Maybe I'm wrong and maybe you're right,
Maybe I'm wrong and maybe you're right.
Cordor I love you, but you’re breaking my heart.
Oh, how I hope that I’m wrong...
But, maybe. Maybe, I’m right…

Singer’s notes:

This song is long overdue, it's been weighing on me, but I couldn't put the words down.

I love the city. Walking into Cordor from Waterdeep, it just felt like home. But, it's that dark side that feels like a dagger to the heart. Azaria, with blood that runs purely with good intent, gets run out of the town. Gus, the one constant in the Guard, is relieved of command. Using the arts as means of expression gets banned. And even the King, who, no one knows what he does in his castle all day long.

That's just the surface. Love and hate.

It's saddening and to you, dear reader, I leave this ballad.

(An obvious tribute to New York, I Love You, but You're Bringing Me Down)

The Sorcerer of the Radiant Heart

High tempo and upbeat, performed with lute

The moon was bright and the night was clear
No breeze came over the Spire.
When the four left the Golden Halls,
And wandered onward to aspire.
Though deepest chill was felt to the bone,
Bonds of friendship provide the warmth,
And valour thrusts into the unknown,
Thus the four, brave souls, push forth.

Stories and Plays,
Like our lives these days,
Have an ebb and flow,
Of highs and lows.

As we wandered to the mouth of the beast,
And our fates began to lour.
It was a solace still that she was with us,
In Auril's lonely hour.
When blizzards lashed our stern shields held,
Until we began to fall.
One maiden's form withstood the storm,
'Twas the sorcerer of Radiant Hall.

Stories and Plays,
Like our lives these days,
Have an ebb and flow,
Of highs and lows.

And as my eyes froze shut,
In numbing frozen grotto.
She whispered faith and happiness,
And we felt our strength being to grow.
The sorcerer calls, “sally forth, brave souls”,
“For victory yet awaits”, with purpose and a drawl.
Had fate not linked my love to hers,
The sorcerer of Radiant Hall.

Sorcerer of the Radiant Heart.
Sorcerer of the Radiant Heart.
Had fate not linked my love to hers,
The sorcerer of the Radiant Heart.

Singer’s notes:

There was a recent trip that the four of us (Izzy, Thalys, Sylrie and myself) made into the Spires and we encountered more than a normal share of Aurilites. I've never fought so hard to protect the people I care for, but I considered that may not have been enough if not for the magic of Sylrie.

While this is song does not reflect the exact truth of what happened, I defer to artistic liberty; it is a tribute to her and what could have been, and she is certainly owed such a tribute.

Embrace the Light

Walking through the Hub without fear,
Live as if everywhere is your personal Palace,
The weak bow down to you, hoping to be spared.
You bring death to those who oppose you.
The world is yours and you take what you want, and,

I know you think this is about you,
Trust me when I say it’s not.
Trust me,
Trust me.

Your idols are false and not worth the praise.
A large sword does not hide fears as she cowers.
Nor is the one with the fragile mind.
Only a matter of time before they cut each other apart.
And he watches from the shadows, content in the suffering, and,

I know you think this is about you,
Trust me when I say it’s not.
Trust me,
Trust me.

They, don’t care.
They don’t care about you.
Lies, all lies, told to keep you complacent.
Even in eternal darkness, there is Light.
Hear my Voice,
And take our hands.

Singer’s notes:

This song was originally written when Ezra was still alive, but I had to change it now that he's dead. I still don't know why; everything I've heard has been a lie thus far.

Music, more than any other form of art, has the power to inspire people caught behind a hand of oppression (I'm biased, dear reader, shush, and allow me to have this). I can't just keep it to myself; especially when I know how much Vance enjoys the arts.
