The Gnome's Thoughts

Post by Petrifictus » Wed Aug 23, 2017 8:51 pm

It's late in Burrowhome, most of the folks retreat inside to their homes or the nearby inn as the town goes little by little silent until it's interrupted by the steps of a lone gnome.

The gnome lays his back on the hin sized bench as he gazes the night sky and takes a deep breath as he opens a small whiskey bottle, it has been a long day to Wotan Woodberry of the Oakenhearts.

"He's Wotan the Brave! The Defender of Crags! The Hero of Bendir!" - Friedrich Oaktree's words echoed in his mind. His commander had said those words to the first hin girl they had met while trying to set her up with his friend, trying to teach Wotan a few things about the women and dating after he had been deeply shocked about learning his captain's great lack of experience about the subject. The attempt failed because Wotan's gibberish panic, yet Friedrich had taken "a vow" to not give up on his friend about this. Wotan sighs feeling awkward as he look the stars.

"You're the famous gnome Wotan Woodberry?!" - The former mayor Lissa's words came to his mind, these words were said long before the terrible Battle of Bendir against the Drow but this fact was not wrong, his name indeed had become little famous around the island.
Wotan sighs again as he takes a sip of whiskey and continues looking the stars.

Ever since he sailed here, spreading the message of Baervan Wildwanderer, the Forest Gnome, kicking butts for goodness against scum and villany, doing good and helping people and the creatures of the forests, hunting for new sights of the incredible beaty to feed his curious nature and making friends wherever he went. But when Triah Tane, now Triah Oaktree ,wife of Friedrich asked him to join the Oakenhearts, his once innocent life was hardened by hard trials which came afterwards.

He had fought alongside with his brothers and sisters with the Triad forces inside the Infernal Prison in Skull Crags against the vile warlock, her allies and all the horrors they saw.
He heard the Nature's Dream and searched for Ivory Bushdigger's aid to figure it out. He had met Warden Smith and given his aid against Urdlen and his spriggans.
He had defended the town of Greyhammer with Terto during the festival when the moles attacked. He had fought in the Battle of Bendir and seen sick mind trickery by seeing his corpse which has given him nightmares. He sighs a third time and takes another sip of whiskey while looking the stars.

All these experiences has made him feel little restless and lost, these feelings have grown as the trust of his friends and allies lie heavily on his shoulders. He has started to spent more time in the nearby roads and woods searching himself. Yet he does not feel entirely unhappy as there is still good in the world. The wedding between Friedrich and Triah was a proof there's still good and happiness in the world and he had cried a little when he carried the rings and Triah to the altair. He smiles as he see the flying star in the night sky.

"You're the greatest and closest friend Wotan, you know that?" - Wotan remember Triah's words and her strong hug before the wedding as he had come early before the others to make sure there would be no danger around like the last time in the Handfastings in Greyhammer.
He sighs with a smile as he wipes a single tear from his eye.
Perhaps this why the Forest Gnome sailed him on the island, to watch over and protect others from scum and villany. To provide aid and happiness.

"The Forest Gnome indeed provides but he would wish you to provide yourself happiness." -
Maybe Friedrich is right, maybe he should pursue his own happiness as well, maybe he should ask...
Wotan's thoughts are interrupted by his deep yawn, his mind and body starts feeling empty, maybe he's been awake too long or perhaps that last sip of whiskey was too much. He rises up from the bench and heads to search a comfortable place to take a nap.

Forest Gnome protects,
Forest Gnome provides,
Forest Gnome watch over us.

Re: The Gnome's Thoughts

Teeths of the orcs, giants and humans, a ragged doll and stolen treasures, these offerings lies on the nature's altair in Burrowhome behind the inn. These are the monthly gifts to the gnome deity of travel, nature and forest, Baervan Wildwanderer, also known as the Forest Gnome, the Masked Leaf and as the Father of Fish & Fungus.

Wotan Woodberry of the Oakenhearts kneels at the altair as he picks his emerald, a beloved gift from Ivory Bushdigger from his pocket and starts muttering a gnomish prayers. The nearby sellsword, Bonzo Rippert mocks the offerings as silly and trash but to Wotan, each of them tells a great story which serves as his gift to the Forest Gnome.

The teeths represent the defeated scums and villains.
The ragged doll represent an avenged child.
The stolen treasures represent the spoils of victory.

In return for his gifts, Wotan asks what he always has: a little bit of good luck, protection and favour for him and his friends. Praying and offering gifts to the Forest Gnome has always eased him with feelings of peace and safety for his entire life, as long he can remember.

The troubled thoughts have once more come to haunt his mind and taken some sleep: the Spriggans and the Banenites.

The Spriggans are building a weapon to bring "a war to end all wars." A thought about the such tool of destruction shudders him and he wonders when or where the ”Sad Gnome”, the ”Chosen One” as he and Ivory had nicknamed from the Nature's Dream would appear. Ivory had advised him to simply wait and see but Wotan went to seek the Desert Flower for the Oracle in the Lost Desert with Dilir to gain any vision to aid him in this war but without success. Wotan had shed tears as the flower had not bloomed for him.

The rumours about the return of the Banenites disturbs Wotan. They bring up bad memories about his first and last encounter with one of their agents, Zeek. He had murdered his travelling companion in the front of his eyes and later demanded him for ”trial” held by the Church of Bane for not paying tribute, praising the Forest Gnome in Minmir and shooting him as self-defence while fleeing. He had first been afraid of them but as the years passed and no call for ”trial” came, Wotan had shrugged and viewed them as bullies as his friend Milla Undt had adviced.
But now he wonders if they remember after all and sent the call. If he answer then it would be a certain death to him as Banenites cannot be trusted to be just and fair, but if not then he and all his friends would suffer as the enemies of the church.

These thoughts make Wotan feel helpless and lonely, he opens a small bottle of whiskey and pours some of it in the wooden cup and as he places it in the altair, Bonzo curses few words at the ”short fries” for wasting a good booze. Wotan raises his bottle at the altair, takes a sip and continues his prayers with his emerald.

More troubled thoughts pour into his mind: Khabul and the possible rot inside the Oakenhearts.

He had never known or heard about Khabul until he first saw him in the Shanna Waynolt's Greengrass event. He was told that this man was a slaver, a butcherer of hins and worse, a Malarite, the servant of Malar the Beastlord, the second enemy of the Forest Gnome beside Urdlen.
He saw how Dilir and Fifi beat and exiled him from Burrowhome when he had tried to enslave dwarves and hins. In Cordor he had ran into his friend Kent Delocke who was gathering a hunting party against Khabul as he had tried to invoke a war with the Church of Bane during the peace meeting and taken a hostage. He once met him in Mayfields near the Mage Tower where he gave a threat to Wotan for not pushing his luck because his blood was not needed yet.

What's so special about his blood? He had left to wonder why his blood would be important but Terto Tarquin had dismissed it as that gnomes are just not wanted in the slavemarket right now.

The possible rot inside the Oakenhearts, the thought of such thing hurt him like a deep wooden thorn under the skin. Back in the desert when Wotan had shown the stronghold to Dilir that this is where the Oaks work when they're guarding the roads. At that moment Dilir mentioned that this place belongs to Khabul and questioned are the Oakenhearts working with slavers, Wotan was shaken about the thought, yet he felt he needed to know and such, opened the gates to investigate the stronghold with Dilir.
They found a stolen elven runestone, skulls of the fallen victims, some notes but nothing about the Oakenhearts. Yet they still wondered, did Commander Friedrich Oaktree know they were working with the slavers, were the Oakenhearts protecting slave caravans on the roads this whole time?
Wotan trembled as he could not imagine it, all his brothers and sisters were good people, it could not be true, it had to be impossible.
Perhaps this was another sick mind trick from the Spriggans? Maybe Khabul or his slavers had lied to Friedrich? How many of the Oakenhearts knew about this? Did Triah Oaktree know?

Wotan asked Dilir to not act againts the Oakenhearts before he was sure about the truth. Is there really rot inside the Oakenhearts and how deep it will go? What if this is all just one big misunderstanding? He would get the answers somehow.

Wotan finish his prayers and kiss his emerald which he returns to his pocket. He wish he had someone to talk to right now, someone he could trust, someone who could ease his troubled mind. He looks at Bonzo who's currently picking a fight with the nearby hin.

”Nope.” - he shakes his head.

He looks at the tree near the well. Ivory is not nearby or maybe she's hiding in shadows again. Wotan sighs as he would certainly liked to have her company. She always had some comforting words of wisdom.

He has no idea where Triah is, last he heard from Kent that she was knighted by the "Ordo Cordoria" or whatever they were called. He also heard that the Oakenhearts were put in hold, is this act connected with the possible rot? Still he would liked to have her kind company and hugs.

Maybe he should travel to Cordor and see if Kent is free. Last time they were talking about having a drinks and talk next time. Perhaps with luck he could hear few of Pinkie's songs in the Nomad.

”Sigh.”
Wotan rolls around left in his bed. He has taken a room in Brogendenstein's brewery to rest a night after tiresome work when he finally proved the Oakenheart's purity to Dilir, then couple nervous meetings with Warden ”Smith” to visit the dwarves Falgrim & Gorudan and afterwards the Triad's Eric Lugger & Noirin.

”Nggh..”
Wotan rolls around righ in his bed. He has trouble to sleep again, it's not the moaning of the nearby dwarves or the bubbling brews which keeps him awake, it's his troubled thoughts again.
He was trusted an important quest to scout the enemy fortification, to seek there some information, to find and possibly destroy a mighty weapon which threatens all in Arelith. If he fails and gets caught, he would end up dead, enslaved or worse and all would pay the price of his failure. He feels once more scared, alone and helpless.

”Sob.”
Wotan rolls around in middle in his bed. He tries to hold his tears as he picks up an elven phrasebook, trying to learn some of their tongue. Reading and repeating it has helped him a little before the nap, even if he's never succeeded to say a single elven word. As he quickly starts flipping the pages and muttering few words, he succumbs to his feelings.

”Deep breath.”
Wotan quickly rise from his bed. He pick up a bottle of whiskey from his backpack and stops staring his image from the glass. It's been hard to be brave and keep smiling to others while fighting this war against Spriggans. He's a coward who always worries about everything.
When he had finally met his best friend Triah Oaktree after a long time, he had not dared to ruin their happy reunion with his troubles. Even while having tea with Burrowhome's Mayor, Kera Nutcracker, he just smiled and acted he's fine. Dilir & Fifi had offered him an ear and shoulder, telling him he does not need to bear this burden alone.

”Pop!”
Before Wotan can pour the whiskey, he notice a ring in his finger, a ring from Ivory Bushdigger, the fellow servant of the Forest Gnome. He always had fond feelings for her from the moment they met, feelings which turned into love step by step every time they met again and again. He had not dared to bring them up in fear she might get angry, scared or awkward. He did not want to lose her and break the bond of friendship he already had with her.

He had almost forgotten Friedrich Oaktree's ”training” about the women until he was invited by the pair of dwarves, one of them being Falgrim, to solve the ”Riddle of Women” with the several shots of whiskey. After many rounds, the whiskey had finally went to his head. Being drunken he cried to dwarves how he wanted to be close to her, hear her voice, feel her hair and taste her tongue.
Encouraged by the dwarves and whiskey, Wotan wandered to seek Ivory who just happened to be right outside the inn, talking with ”Smith.” She looked concerned as he stumbled in front of them, asking quickly advice from ”Smith” to the ”riddle,” who then guided Wotan back to Ivory.

Ivory had then asked Wotan to come with her to take some fresh mountain air to clear his mind.
She stood beside him while he sat down, helping him to sober up under the smell of pin needles.
As his mind started to be cleared, he had felt feelings of shame and panic for his drunken actions in the front of her and started crying, yet she still stood with him understanding and listening his feelings for her.

As Wotan had calmed down, Ivory gave him a ring to his finger. It felt like the time stopped moving, he stood frozen like a statue looking at the ring and then back to her. She had given him a emerald at their first meeting and now a ring. They stood a while looking each other eyes and holding hands under the pin needles in night before they departed. The Forest Gnome had finally provided him happiness and incredible beauty!

”Pop!”
Wotan closes the bottle, refusing to take any sips at all. He no longer feel scared, alone or helpless.
He feels much stronger and braver, the weight of Arelith gone from his shoulders.
He will face anything the scum and villains throws at him in this war!
He will fight them with faith and hope!
He will fight for his friends and for his beloved!

”Yawn!”
Wotan feels tired, he heads back to bed. He has a big quest ahead of him, he first need to find Pathfinder Drartha and seek other possible allies before heading against the enemy, but first he need a rest.

"Two steps to left, chikky-chik, stop and clap..."

The words and claps echo throught the Arelith Forest as Wotan Woodberry practice dancing, which Ivory Bushdigger had taught him. He's feeling more free and happy for the first time since joining in the war against the Crawler Below known Urdlen. She had given him many lessons about the world, life and faith which he had taken deep into his heart.

"One, two, three, hey! Clap and repeat..."

He should have more faith to himself, he should treat the Forest Gnome, Baervan as a friend rather than as a overlord and most importantly have fun. Wotan felt great love as Ivory had accepted the ring he had offered, through he still wondered a little what she meant for not being "worthy of him" yet but he had agreed to wait her until the squirrels says they're ready. Maybe once the war is over.

"Four, five six, jump two steps right and clap. Chikky chik chik, clap and repeat. Hey!"

It's been a while since the Oakenhearts were disbanded, he feels little pity about it and miss the bonds he had with them. At some point Triah Oaktree, his former vice-commander, a close friend & sister had offered him and her husband, Friedrich a place in the Ordo Cordoria as high ranking officers. Former commander Friedrich took the offer but Wotan felt he needed more time to think it as the war still raged in Bendir and he could not allow himself to be bound in Cordor.

"Dorothy wants to sleep! Two steps back, two steps forward. Chikky chik chik, clap, chikky chik chiks..."

The Ordo Cordoria was not the only one to offer a place. Kera Nutcracker and Fibbs Ridstone had offered him a place amongst the Hawk'ins, the defenders of Bendir because his long role in the war. Again Wotan had asked time to think the offer. He's not sure why he hesitates to choose. Is it because he feel betraying the Oakenhearts by joining or is it because their disbanding hurt his feelings? Nevertheless he would need to give his answer soon.

"Wotan says she's a sheep! Two steps back, chikky chik chik, clap and take two steps forward. Chikky chik chik, clap..."

He wonders how long the war will last and what happens after as he's been running many tasks for Warden "Smith." Wotan has imagined himself and Ivory to find and build a new home for the forest gnomes. He had already scouted around the different roads and forests, whispered to the animals but he has not found a right place yet. Maybe they settle down in Bendir or in Guldorand if he's not successful. Perhaps they'll disappear into shadows never to be seen again in Arelith.

"Lady says I want go to sleep! Swing arms side to side, chikky chik chik and clap..."

Whatever happens in the end, Wotan wish his long lifetime would have full of laugh and joy, free from the burdens of war and threats of the scum and villainy, with Ivory and friends in his side.

"We'll dance until the sun shines bright! Clap, chikky chik chik, swing arms, chikky chik chik chik chik, claps over and out. Clap and hey!"

”Look, there are purple dust on the ground. Look around, no one to see, only a wicked sound. Some treezles in the trees, some buzzles in the bushes. Is there a voice that at you hushes?”

”It is us I am singing of, Wotan.” *she chuckles*

”A small forest being, hair with purple dust like flour. More purple than a twisted twizzle flower. More nixier and trixier than MinMir nixie dust. More elusive than puppled purple clouds.”

”When they disapears around the Bend. They leave only memories of illusions, mystery and legend. So before memory in your souls will rust. And forgotten, this is what you must.”

”If you some empty air and a hole brought. Breathed a rock's shadow, and ate a thought. You will see being and the purple dust again. If you close your eyes, and from hearing abstain.”

*She nods and strokes his hand, only slightly and very short* ”Come, it were time we joined the others.”

Wotan Woodberry wakes up from his deep meditation. He's spend some time on the high trees of Arelith Forest after his beloved, Ivory Bushdigger took him up there to aid him recover after the events of the Festival of Star and breaking the Iron Prison. Here he would be free from the thoughts of war and dream of her whenever he missed her presence. He had played her song many times in his mind and each time remembering it made him happy.

In the Festival of Star, they had freed the Grotto, the home of the gnomes from the tyranny of spriggan imposter, ”Torlarnd the Greater” with the aid of the dwarves of Brogdenstein. Unfortunately Warden Smith was captured and the gnomes of the Earthkin Alliance were left without a leader. Who would rise to lead when he's gone? Terto Tarquin? Lissa Whitehorn?

Mykthar Silverbeard and Ghestaldt Blimth, thane of Brogdenstein had suggested him to rise up to lead the gnomes. He had felt scared and nervous about the weight of such burden,

What if he cant?
What if he's not worthy of the earthkin ideals and the faith the people have for him?
What if he would fail and others would be hurt or killed?
What if he would end up being hated?

He had travelled around the Arelith and discussing with his close friends and loved ones about taking the leadership, and all of them had encouraged him to be a leader. Kent Delocke told that Wotan is the builder of bridges between the people, maybe the one who can heal the bad blood between Cordor and Brogdenstein. Warden Smith told that he's a born leader and a great hero, representing the very ideals of the Earthkin Alliance. Even Ivory had given short comment that maybe he should become a leader as she's one of the Elders of Bendr.

With such faith from others, Wotan felt he can walk the road of a leader laid before him.

As Friedrich Oaktree had told him, how can he fail if he does not try? What he has to lose? He was sure his friends, allies and loved ones would guide him back if he ever got lost from his path.

Wotan worked together with the dwarves and elves to break Warden Smith out from the Iron Prison.
In the prison, he was blast by the machine which spriggans had used to turn gnomes into one of them. He felt unspeakable pain as his body, mind and soul was been twisted and bend, but by some miracle from the Forest Gnome or luck, he survived. Wotan was very shocked and scared after his experience but after deep meditation in the woods with Ivory, he endured.

Wotan picks up his bag and climbs down from the tree, feeling a disturbance in the nature and thus he starts his walk towards the mountains of Brogdenstein.

In the roads of Bendir, a groups of earthkin refugees travel to return back to their homes ever since the word about the Illusion War's ending spread all around the Arelith. With the spriggan threat gone, the people can finally sleep their nights with both eyes closed without keeping daggers under the beds.

Wotan Woodberry spends his time leading the refugees and keeping watch for their safety in case for any remaining evils from the war which might lurk in the nearby shadows. As the night rises and most of the earthkins lie sleeping, the gnome spends his time gazing the fire as his boar Bruva lightly snores right beside him.

He feels sore and tired, the Second Battle of Bendir took much of his strenght as he fought the endless waves of the worst scum & villainy while the skies rained with fire by the spriggan machines which corrupted the caught gnomes and halflings with foul energies. Wotan was struct by the blast a second time with Terto Tarquin and he felt the same corruption in his body, mind and soul that he had experienced in the Iron Prison. In the highest hill of the battlefield, where they were surrounded by the enemy, he hugged the great tree, offered a prayer to Baervan the Forest Gnome and by the holy miracle, once again he was cleansed and saved.

After the final victory, he joined the hunt for Mephez, the last of the three enemy leaders deep inside the Golag Mur. Alongside Thane Ghestaldt Blimth of Brogdenstein, they judged him guilty and punishment was death. Before Terto dealt the killing blow, Mephez laughed about coming back more powerful than ever, and Wotan asked him to tell his evil god, the Crawler Below, Urdlen who send him.

The Illusion War was over but it still had one more victim to claim. Terto Tarquin fell into darkness as Mephez's blood dropped in his hands when he turned his cold angry gaze at Wotan.

”Why? What makes you special? Why were you saved from their corruption while I was not? Why did you become a leader?”

The seven years of war against the spriggans had deeply broke him inside as their corruption covered his body. Unleashing all of his hatred on Mephez had pushed him over the edge.

”One of us is right, Wotan of the Woods. One of us is wrong. It should not be me, I'm the strongest of the two of us, the best bet for our people.”

As Mykthar Silverbeard and Warden Falgrim were ready to strike down the fallen gnome, Wotan asked the dwarves to hold their arms as instead facing the hatred with fear, he chose love when he hugged him. He could feel in his heart that there was still good inside Terto, a conflict. Confused he tried to deny it but he did not raise his blade against Wotan. Instead he was allowed to leave in return for a promise to not harm others as this was between Wotan and Terto.

”I will give you time, in which you will prove that you're right, and if you dont... I will deal with you as I see fit.”

Wotan Woodberry and Terto Tarquin, the two different sides of a same coin.
Where Wotan could see the best in the other races, Terto saw only the worse.
Wotan believed in the unity of the Earthkin Alliance when Terto only felt that the gnomes should survive on ther own without others.
Wotan acted by faith and dreams. Terto acted by reason and logic.
Knowing Terto's past he could not help but to think that if their roles were reversed, he would be standing in the darkness and Terto in the light. What if Terto had experienced the goodness of others and Wotan knowing only the evil. He could not save him today but maybe someday with the aid from others.

The light of the rising dawn shines upon him, the earthkin refugees would wake up soon and continue their travel to Bendir. After returning them to their homes, he plan to find his beloved Ivory Bushdigger, take her to his promised trip to the Plane of Nature to meet squirrels and spend some time together before leading the gnomes to the new tomorrow of peace.

Warden Smith, Torlarnd Ironfoot is dead.

A mentor, a battle brother and a friend.

He was not killed by the spriggan trickery.
He was not killed by the black arrows of drow.
He was killed by the hands of a fellow gnome, Terto Tarquin.

Wotan Woodberry stands looking at his mirror. The deep cut in his chest from Terto's scimitar still stings as he feels it with his hand. It's been a rough time after the end of the Illusion War against the Crawler Below, his duty as a leader of the gnomes and the break up with Ivory Bushdigger.

Some of the deep gnomes such as S'mut had raised their voices for not wanting a surface gnome to lead the Grotto or their people, with excuses such as that the Council of Elders was not asked.

Where were these elders during the war he fought?
They were not around when spriggan double "Torlarnd the Greater" rose in power and Wotan had fought to free the Grotto with the help of his earthkin allies. Warden Falgrim mentioned himself feeling that these elders were fleeing from their duty and now that the war has been won, they want the power back.

Where were they when the gnomes were left without a leader when Smith was captured by the spriggans? Wotan remembers never wanting the weight of leadership yet it was thrown at his shoulders as there was none other and when he was ready to step down after the rescue, the warden had felt otherwise, having faith in him.

The rift between the surface and deep gnomes has grown larger. It's true that the Grotto was build by his deep kin in the past but they dont see that it has grown to being a home to their surface kin as well. The blind pride, hatred and fear from his kin had made him feel tired, making him wonder if he should stay away from the Grotto for good. Then he remembers his promise to Smith during the war.

The promise to make sure the Grotto and gnomes wont be forgotten and lost.
The promise to keep the Earthkin Alliance strong.

Perhaps he will gather his supporters, call a meeting with the elders and have a talk about the leadership. Or he will stay away to keep watch over the Grotto from surface and help in its times of needs. For now its safe from the spriggan corruption and he wont need to bother his mind with it.

Wotan feels a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders after the Earthkin Alliance had judged Terto quilty and exiled him from their regions for his crimes. He cant stop feeling pity and sadness for his fallen battle brother, despite his role in Smith's death. He prays Terto will someday find his path back to light to the redemption.

He would have never defeated Terto in the trial without the support from his friends and fellow earthkins, who were there for him in his time of need and finding his lost balance.

Now he need to start preparing for the date with dame Lorina Phelenfelen in the Bendir's Safeday festivals, gather 20 flowers for her and ease his mind.

Then he will work on Smith's funeral.

"You are a sweetheart, caring for all people, even those whose hearts are tainted. You aren't very confident, but you make that up well with warmith and kindness. And you are true to your values, and do not compromise them." - Lorina Phelenfelen

Wotan Woodberry lies on bed after his date with dame Lorina Phelenfelen, the gnome paladin of Mystra. He's still feeling the first kiss they shared, the warmith of their arms around each other and the scent of sweetberry wine. If he had to describe his feelings, the answer would be melting.

He had never experienced anything like this with Ivory Bushdigger, who he dated once but after the Illusion War ended, they broke up with their personal quests and duties, luckily without any bad blood between them. Meriam "Merry" Willoyew, the druid of Sheela, had suggested that perhaps there never was any true romance between the two and they just wanted someone close to them during the war with the spriggans.

After being single again, at some point he met Glinda Glitterbrook, the gnome druid of Baervan, in which Ivory had once made a side comment they would make a good couple when three of them met.
Some earthkins in Bendir even thought of them being together, because of their shared faith and interests. There might have or been something with them, but Wotan sometimes felt there was a wall between him and Glinda, as she tend to not take interest when he felt troubled or serious, simply walking away or changing the subject, but she had become a close friend to him.

Lorina was something different, someone he had never experienced. She was dedicated and determined to what felt right, she had loyalty, honour and goodness in her heart, and was adorable sight of beauty. When they first met, she felt very strickt with her formal code but more time they spent together, with small flirting between each other or taking a bath in the hot springs, she became more open and easy, even calling him with his name instead as "Lord W.W."

She caught him off guard as she made the first move by asking him to date after Terto Tarquin's trial and exile. They agreed to meet each other in the Bendir's Safeday, giving him a small quest to bring 10 flowers to her and hinted something more special if he collected 20. Wotan spent next 10 days collecting 21 flowers, one of them being the famous Desert Flower of the Lost Desert, brewing best sweetberry wine he could and travelled to Cordor to buy cheese.

The day before the Safeday, halfling Sakura Rune surprised him, telling him how half of Bendir knows about the date between two gnomes and she wished to offer help. Wotan felt nervous about the news as he wanted to give Lorina a date in which she could feel perfect, he agreed to take Sakura's offer. She did not ease his nervous feelings however as she turned his beard pink without asking with her magic, bought him a fancy black & pink clothes in which Wotan felt uncomfortable and gave many lessons such as what place to pick or how to kiss. He even used perfume Merry had gifted him.

Waiting was the worst when people started to gather on Safeday and it was raining. Wotan spent time walking in circles with nervous muttering, until Merry asked him to sit down on couch and Peter Black, the knight of Bane offered a drink to ease his mind. He went to throw darts to calm down until he lost the track of time when Lorina arrived. She weared a pink dress and even had dyed her hair into same colour, leaving no doupts it being Sakura's handywork, yet it did not bother him at all as he found himself being unable to keep his eyes away from her. She was very taken about the flowers he had gathered.

When the rain stopped, Wotan asked Lorina to come with him away from the inn to sit down on the swing in the nearby tree, just the two of them alone in peace. They sat close together in gently swinging, with a sips of sweetberry wine and feeding each other with small pieces of cheese, growing closer. Lorina was little worried for the possible scandal if anyone could see them but Wotan eased her mind with a small laugh by joking that they can bribe the nearby dwarf pig if need be.

They small talked about different things such as how they see each other personally or about
the codes of courting, in which Lorina explained to Wotan what somebody known as "Lady Estavia" had taught her, such as first impression being most important. It did not take long until Wotan followed feelings in his guts and kissed her, both of them losing all the sense of time as they kept their arms around each other. When their lips finally separated, they decided to check on others only to find out that they had missed most of the fireworks but for their luck, Merry still had some fireworks left to honour the couple and she blew up a image of boar with sword and bow in the skies, which reminded him about his animal companion, Bruva. After that the Safeday ended, Wotan rode Lorina back to her home in the Tungsten Turret, where they promised to make time for the second date with their duties.

Wotan falls asleep with a blushing grin in his face, dreaming of adorable Lorina...

Another mug of black coffee is poured as Wotan Woodberry keeps watch over Meriam "Merry" Fuzzypaw as she lies resting on her cot in the Bendir Dale.

Merry had risked her life to save him when he was captured during the last Underdark raid in the surface. She was still recovering from her near death experience after losing most of her guts to the Banishment spell while being in the elemental form. Wotan had spent time looking after her and giving treatment as best he could, yet she refuse to rest and keeps pushing the limits with the risk of death, which has just grown his worries as well annoyance.

"Wotan the Hero", more like "Wotan the Useless." He's cursing himself for not being able to keep the people he cares about safe. He's not a great warrior like Terto Tarquin, a spiritual leader like Torlarnd Ironfoot, a sage like Ivory Bushdigger or a thinker like Lissa Whitehorn.

Wotan rubs his eyes as he tries to stay awake, but without success. His nightmares about the Spriggan War starts haunting him again. The White Mole, Urdlen the Crawler Below hunts him in his dreams, bringing all the evil, destruction, ruin, chaos, bloodshed and death. He finds himself alone, his friends and loved ones gone as he's drown into the endless horde of spriggans.

He wakes up scared with cold sweat and heads to the nearby well to wash his face. How long he needs to endure this? Does Kera Nutcracker experience the same dreams?
Or are these the remains of Spriggan Corruption he survived from twice?

Wotan sits down and pours himself another mug of black coffee.
He has kept himself busy from his nightmares with the Woodberry Brewery, his duties as Minister of Gnomish Affairs while building a home for his fellow gnomes in the Bendir Dale and growing their low numbers from the war. But he needs to find a way to deal with his bad dreams for good before the unbalance harms the inner peace. He's gathered the Leaves of the Dreaming Tree for the Dream Trip in his mind, so he could face his demons and find and free himself from the pain, guilt and sadness.

But not all has been grimdark with his past events. After a two years of couring, Lorina Phelenfelen had accepted Wotan's proposal of marriage and she had brought light to his life. They had not picked the wedding date yet as she refuses to proceed into any planning before he has met her parents, through that has not stopped him investigating a little about different traditions on his own, such as the Handfasting of hins.

He picks a script from his bag, "Injustice of Kellarn," Katie Popkins' coming play, in which she asked Wotan to play as Terto. Reading and speaking to himself helps him to stay awake as he watch over sleeping Merry.

"It's time..."

The familiar inner voice from the distant past wakes up Wotan Woodberry. He does not find himself in his home in the Bendir Dale but instead in the unknown green passage with leaves.

"The time is coming soon..."

The voice becomes stronger with the every step the gnome takes forward until at the dead end of the passage he encounters a hole in earth. Wotan is feeling little afraid to step in as the gnomish myths warn about Urdlen the Crawler Below who's preying upon the gnomes in the deep burrows.

Wotan takes deep breath as he drops himself down into the hole. He keeps falling until suddenly the gnome finds himself floating in the space between space.

"Really soon..."

He turns at the voice, shocked by finding himself face to face with his mentor, Torlarnd Ironfoot, who had died by the blade of Terto Tarquin. Before Wotan could say a word or react, he suddenly falls into the deep space and wakes up in his home in the Bendir Dale.

Marriage & Family

Wotan Woodberry lies awake on his bed, looking at the mirror on the other side. He's not alone as his newlywed wife Lorina, Phelenfelen turned Woodberry, lies in deep sleep on his chest.

Wotan had lost the track of time while staring at themselves on the mirror. He had awoken to the slight numb feelings in his right arm and legs, which were found under the weights of Lorina and boar Bruva, but he had not dared to move them with the risk of waking them up as the sight was too adorable.

The wedding between Wotan and Lorina had finally happended despite the many bumps on the road, be it their personal duties or one of the many crises in the Bendir Dale. Title of Husband takes some time to get used into but he accepts it happily alongside the responsibilities and duties it broughts.

Wotan notice an open journal between him and Lorina, she must had fallen asleep and forgotten to lock it up. He feels little tempted to take a peek, read what she has writen like about himself but he rather choose to respect her privacy by closing it and placing it under the bed with his free left arm.

He looks at the wedding gifts on the bookshelf, a Golden Acorn given by the Archdruid Beryl Whitestorm and a gnomish doll by Terto Tarquin himself, both blessings for their union and the future offspring. Lorina had biten her lips when Wotan had asked about the children when the doll was shown up. During Meriam "Merry" Fuzzypaw's pregnancy in the past she had said only raising one gnome but after the weddings with the doll, Lorina made it clear that she wants at least four small gnomes into their new family when the time comes.

Lorina wished to raise their children safe in the mainlands away from the troublesome isle of Arelith, but she knew Wotan's love for the Dale and promised to wait until his work there feels fully done so that he can leave it with a good will. They are gnomes and they have a lot of time, through Wotan had slipped into writing up few names on the notes already, like Torlarnd after his mentor if their firstborn is a boy or after the famous cow, Myrtle in case of a girl.

Small yawn comes out from the gnome as the lack of sleep is catching up to him. He gives a kiss at the head of his beloved wife and closes eyes back to rest.

The Forgotten One is dead. After the Spriggan Corruption was lifted, the Shadow Mole was struct down and the lost gnomes of the Spriggan War were finally avenged.

The weight of the past had been lifted from Wotan Woodberry's shoulders and he could once more feel being free and at peace.

The cost of the battle had been high with the loss of beloved Ivory Bushdigger, but Wotan would not allow himself to be bound by the grief or regret. He once had already done that mistake. He would rise and move forward as she would have wanted.

Wotan still has one more quest to finish, Terto Tarquin, who is all what he could have become if the taint and past had claimed him. During his time with the corruption, Wotan's mind was clouded by the anger and fear but now he feels simply pity on his fallen brother.

His wife, Lorina Woodberry and Ivy Pebbletoe, who had become like a daughter to him, had asked him to forgive Terto, as he was already defeated with his exile from the earthkin lands and becoming outcast amongst his people. Ivory had once told Wotan that only way to save Terto is through positivity.

Wotan wants to face Terto once more, to see if the taint has been lifted or become like a loose nail waiting to be removed. He knows that the crimes of the past are too great to be lifted but least he could do is to offer a new start and chance to be with his people in the Isle of Skal, where he would be free from all the bad blood. But first Wotan needs to find Terto and that task has proved to be a great headache.

Retired and crippled.

Wotan Woodberry tends the Hawk's Nest Inn as barkeep, sharing tales of his journeys, tips of wisdom and experience while getting used to his enchanted artifical wooden leg made by the Fuzzypaw family.

The Oakenheart, Hero of the Spriggan War, Hin Friend, Hawk Commander of the Hawk'ins, Veteran Ranger of Baervan, Minister of Gnomish Affairs and keeper of many other titles.

Each title tells a story.
About saviours and conquerors.
About heroes and villains.
About friends and rivals.
About victories and defeats.
About rewards and loss.

Wotan had lost the track of time about how long he has lived in the isle since sailing here. Must be about between 17 to 20 years in total if he's right. He first came to Arelith to explore and feed his curious nature as Baervan Wildwanderer had taught, but these days the gnome just wants to be settled down, work with his brewery, be close to his loved ones and raise family.

As Venerated Elder of the Bendir Dale, he now needs to lead from the behind and not in the front, making sure the new adventurers are ready to forge new legends as this is a world of infinite tales.

The Bendir Dale feels split and divided.

There is a conflict between two unbending sides with the strong sense of being the absolute right.

The first side has long held on the old ways and traditions, wanting to keep them as they always has been. But right now they feel risking corruption, keeping power in the hands of few who just has a right group, title or name.

The air will always turn stuffy if home is not refreshed by opening the windows time to time.

The second side wish to rebel for something new and bring change. These people has been kept silent just because their ideals feel uncomfortable. They were been given a good strong reason to push forward by those who've used the power against them and now all that hard work was rewarded.

But there is still some unrest in the Bendir Dale that keep Wotan Woodberry uneasy and he already regret returning from the Skal into middle of this. Perhaps he should have stayed there with his wife for good.

In the past Meriam Fuzzypaw has done lot of good but the late events have started to doupt her sanity, such as becoming kinslayer and putting herself above the laws again. She tend to put her personal happiness and good before the Dale, such as letting friends, allies or family walk over the people, even if it hindered and undermined the Hawk'in duties in the past.
When Meriam is judged or questioned, she almost take it as attempt to control her life and sometimes treat it as act against the Dale.

Lobelia Gwil sometimes feel naive and blind with the world around her. She has been a better mayor than expected and has not let most of the people down, but sometimes it feels she does errors and falters when the things get difficult. Some hold a grudge on Wotan when he sided with her but in truth it was the Bendir Dale. He can do much more good inside the walls than outside and seek out the truth from this ball of yarn as Venerated Elder.

But the people are getting tired, drained and sick on both of them. The Bendir Dale might need a third option with a gnomish touch to put an end to this sorry play caused by two hins...

"Rest now and be easy. Focus on being a good innkeeper and duty as father to your daughter."

The Nomad Inn and Tavern of Cordor has given Wotan Woodberry peace and quiet he has dreamed for, as well given the new sense of purpose as Master Innkeeper. The baked treats and brewed goods of Woodberry Brewery will turn any lips wet.

In year 146, 24th day of 12th month, the Woodberry family was blessed with a child, little Maple Woodberry, the firstborn daughter of Wotan and Lorina. In the Isle of Arelith, her possibilities will be endless and it will be a good riddle indeed to see what kind of gnome she grows into with the blood of hero in her.

Wotan's ban from the Earthkin Village of Bendir Dale was lifted, his reputation washed clean from the blackpaint, statue fixed back to its former glory and place restored as one of the Venerated Elders.
But like the Great Grotto before, its service as home has ended and gnome has found a new place in Cordor, alongside with new friends and allies.

All the drama, politics and conflicts of wars are things of the past... at least for now in the Isle of Arelith.

Scent of fresh sweetrolls fills the air as baked treats boil in the hot oil...

Noise of cream whipping echo from the kitchen...

Morning light of the rising sun enlighten the bar...

Pair of iron golems walks out from the storage to start their watch...

Wotan Woodberry carefully cuts the sweetrolls in half, filling them with the whipped cream and raisin jam, taking the tower of baked treats into the bar to wait for the hungry patrons that will be soon awake.

The morning feast is ready and Wotan can catch a breath with his family before he sets up the open flag in the first bar.

Lorina Woodberry and little Maple have already settled on the nearby table for breakfast, while Bruva is taking a nap under it with hopes of getting some leftovers.

Wotan cuts himself a slice from the big meat pie with Cordor cheese and garlic, as well picks boiled egg from the bowl and pours some Brogdenstein coffee into his large mug.

It's soon four years since the Woodberries retired in the City of Cordor and took over the Nomad Inn & Tavern.
Wotan has made new friends and allies that visit him often, held different fun events such as the favorites like the Dart Championsip and Dice Lottery.
He even gained a seat in the leadership as Minister of Glee due to becoming highly valued by the citizens of Cordor, who time to time come seeking his advice and guidance or for any tips of experience, wisdom and common sense from behind the bar.

Woodberries finish their breakfast and collect the dishes...

Yawns of the first awoken patrons is heard from the hallway rooms...

Fresh new adventurers step inside to sign up for some writs...

Flags are changed and the first bar is open again...

"Let pain be as pleasure, for life and death are in balance, but death is the more powerful and should be paid proper homage and respect. Death is the true power, the great equalizer, and the lesson that waits for all. If it falls to you to drive home the point with the tip of a dagger, so be it. The Mother of All Plagues works upon you from within, and weakness and wasting is her strength. Talona’s breath is forever and always with you, whomever you or the rest of the world believes in or serves. Let all living things learn respect from Talona and pay homage to her in goods and in fervent worship. If they do so, intercede for them so that Talona will not claim them--this time. Go and work in Talona’s name and let your doings be subtle spectacular, but make them known as the will of the Mistress of Disease."

Difficult gasps for air, all burning fever, skin itching with rash and pox, the dizzy feeling of sickness in the pure darkness where the hurt gnome rest locked inside the tight stone tub alone.

The Cleansing Waters, brewed from the different mixures of poisons and diseases, infecting his tired body as the gnome bath with plagued blood bleeding hands. His skin has gone pale and the eyes have grown shut, the sense of smell, taste and touch barely works anymore. There is only the odd comfortable feeling of ill in the dark with only the priestess' beautiful lullaby to accompany him.

Wotan Woodberry has lost all the track of time...
How long has he bathed in the waters? Tendays? Two?
Too much a headache to think...
Just need to rest and stay awake...
Mend himself back to health...

Re: The Gnome's Thoughts - The End?

Post by Petrifictus » Fri Feb 21, 2020 9:41 am

"Help all who hurt, no matter who they are. The truly holy take on the suffering of others. If you suffer in his name, Ilmater is there to support you. Stick to your cause if it is right, whatever the pain or peril. There is no shame in a meaningful death. Stand up to all tyrants, and allow no injustice to go unchallenged. Emphasize the spiritual nature of life over the existence of the material body." - Ilmater

Faint whimpering of an elven woman is heard behind the locks, gasping for air within the enclosed stone vat of Cleansing Waters, a Talonite treatment for the ill and diseased, an beginning or the end for those who enter into service for the goddess.

Closed from the isle for three days and nights with no food nor rest. Hands cut open in order to help liquid mixtures of nightshade, pus and pulverized glass infect and mend the patient. She will itch with rash and pox, burning with fever and barely able to breath.

Death is reasonable, but those who perish should not be disrespected, as Saint Lladria Sethassiel believed that weakness was an important part of life. Weakness is necessary for the strong to thrive and people should be allowed to be weak if they so desire. With survival and rebirth, the disciple rise with increased strenght and resilience, not to mention a great resistance to the disease.

Wotan Woodberry is very familiar with the treatment by personal experience as he follows the progress as caretaker of the holy sanctum, folding his patient's clean clothes, boiling some porridge as he focus writing his books and taking a break to offer his prayers. Gnome tightens the red cord around his writs, to remind himself who he was and why he's doing this. She's family to him, who had become lost with no purpose, with no duty to give meaning, with no divine to give love and family. All alone in dirt with her sick cough as only company. Such sense of loss is an terrible thing and hits too close to gnome's heart with his own similar past.

But with trust, love and faith, he's glad that she has seen the truth as he did.
There is no need to lie anymore as there has been enough lying.
The goddess has welcomed her home like a mother accepting the lost child.
The family is never lessened when one is foolish, as forgiveness is open to all.
