A Child Is Born

Post by FrozenSolid » Sat Aug 19, 2017 4:45 am

Pairing the divine gifts of Ilmater with a natural talent and understanding for healing Jonah made for an excellent doctor. Being confident in his abilities Jonah assured Faeren during her pregnancy that he was capable of delivering their child and that she had nothing to worry about. But now, when it was all happening he found his knees were weak and his stomach in knots.

"JONAH!" Faeren shouted at him, furious!

Jonah stared at Faeren dumbfounded. She was laying on the bed of their Brogendenstein bedroom looking to be in consderable pain. It was early morning and Faeren had been restless all night and no wonder. The child had decided it was time to be born. Jonah had spent months preparing for this and now his mind was rushing like an avalanche of snow down a moutain.

"I- will get help!" Jonah stammered out then took off running out of the bedroom. Faeren watched him go, wondering if she should strangle him when he returned. Ceviran had told her that he, as a male like Jonah, it was likely Jonah would panic or faint during the childbirth. Ceviran was right, as always.

Jonah stumbled out of the bedroom and darted across the bridge leading to the halls shouting for help as he went. The Brogendenstein dwarves knew of the Reihlin's troubles with Cordor and expected the worst. Armed guards began to rush towards the shouting. They soon found Jonah and peppered him with questions. "What's wrong lad!" one dwarf shouted at him "What're you goin on about?" Another demanded.

Surrounded by heavily armored dwarves Jonah stammered "Faeren she... She... The baby! Right now!"

The dwarven warriors glanced at eachother. They had faced down drow, dragons, slain armies of frost giants and battled down trolls but the idea of child birth made even them squimish. After an awkward pause of glances and feet shuffling a dwarf spoke up. "Sounds like a job fer the wives! I'll go get Brangna!" The dwarf declared then ran off to fetch his wife.

"Aye!" The rest of the dwarves agreed in unison then ran off to fetch their respective wives.

It wasn't long before Faeren was surrounded by a small army of dwarven women. One was councilling her on breathing techniques while another was laying out towels. Two more hauled in warm water and another had grabbed Jonah leading him over to Faeren. "Hold her hand!" The dwarven lady commanded Jonah. Jonah did so without question looking on in disbelief as he was soon to be a father.

Having been given Jonah's hand Faeren squeezed it as if she were trying to break his bones. Jonah winced but didn't pull back. He figured he could endure a hand cramp if Faeren was going through all of this! Plus the glare from the dwarven lass that had commanded him suggested that if he moved he might end up in worse pain. He gripped Faeren back and watched trying desperately to calm his mind.

An older dwarven lady was standing on a stool now. She issued some final orders then hopped off the stool and approached Faeren. Coming to her bed side she asked. "You're doing good! Now...What exactly are you feeling?" Faeren had been clenhing her jaw, in response to the dwarf's question she let out a cry of pain. She took a moment to breathe, then described what she felt.

The dwarven lass nodded calmly as Faren spoke. To her credit, she remained incredibly calm. Clearly this was not the first child she had helped deliver. "Alright" she began to say after listening to Faeren "You need to breath and push, your husband and I will help where we can." She said, then shot Jonah a commanding glare as he pulled Jonah away from Faeren And guided him to the front of the bed.

Having done all they could the other dwarven ladies stood back to watch. Jonah received a quick coaching from the dwarven lady beside him. He nodded slowly, the words barely registering. Despite Jonahs dumbfounded look the Dwarven lady clapped her hands and addressed Faeren. "Alright lass! On the count of three we finish this!" She declared! "One! Two! Threeeee!" She shouted!

After some harshly shouted curse words and a great deal of tears Faeren Reihlin wife of Jonah Reihlin gave birth to her first child. At roughly 35 weeks of pregnancy the child looked healthy. It was a girl, and her arrival into the world was declared by loud crying. Soon after she was wrapped in her fathers loving arms.

Like the breaking of a dam, tears streamed down Jonahs cheeks. He couldn't believe it. After everything they had been through? Everything they had survived. He was speachless. He looked into his arms, the baby girl had her mothers green eyes and darker skin complexion. He grinned and slowly
made his way over to Faeren. He sat down beside her on the bed and gently handed her the child.

Faeren was still recovering but at the sight of her child every other thought and feeling became meaningless. It slipped away, irrelevant. All that mattered was her daughter. She accepted the girl into her arms and cradled her gently. Faeren's green eyes were wide, staring at the child. She could hardly believe that /she/ made that. It was all worth it. How could she have ever waited? Her mind slowed to a halt. She simply stared at the girl in her arms.

Jonah smiled gently watching Faeren's expression. He had never seen her look shocked or at a loss for words. She always had a plan, she was always sure of herself. To see her at a loss? It mimicked his own feeling. They were parents. Jonah leaned forward and kissed Faeren's forehead.

Feeling the kiss on her forehead Faeren's eyes lifted to look at Jonah. She gave him a big dumb grin then looked back to their child. "I can't believe it Jonah." she mumbled.

The dwarven ladies watched the pair, a few "awwwws." and happy laughs came from the group but they soon cycled out of the bedroom to leave the couple and their new born alone.

Faeren was holding the child, but her mind still couldn't believe it was real. This changed everything. Everything. She imagined this moment a hundred times, but living it? Being here now? Her mind was blank.

The only thing that mattered was her child.

Faeren shook her head. She smiled and looked back down to the girl in her arms.

Jonah pulled Faeren against himself, holding her and his daughter together. He sighed happily, tears still streaming out of his eyes. He mouthed a prayer of thanks to Ilmater.

As a boy Jonah had a dark upbringing and had walked a dark road. Marrying Faeren was the first major blow he dealt the darkness inside of himself. Together, he and Faeren confronted the ugliest sides of himself. And now that he saw Faeren and his daughter? The final blow to the evil and darkness within himself was defeated. There wasn't room for it.

The young couple's lives had been changed forever. Arabel Reihlin was the start of a new chapter for the Reihlin family. Now the only question was if baby Arabel had her mothers knack for making trouble. And if she did, was the world ready for a mother and daughter duo of trouble making terror?

Only time could tell!
*Didn't just do that* As an arrow flies hitting someone in the face.
