An Airman's Descent into Madness - Tax dollars at work.

Post by Barradoor » Fri Jan 05, 2018 5:03 am

So, I am currently working details on my base, and I volunteered for CQ. There is a lot of down time, so I've decided to pick up art whilst waiting for other airmen to scan their cards and show me their authorization to wear civilian clothing on base. I hope you enjoy the beautiful images about to come.

I will be posting once per night

Artistic Process

I felt good as I was coloring this one until I got to the sky. The blue looked good, yet, I felt like there was too much. I added a few little swamp trees to break up the monotony. I felt the older turtle needed some more discoloration, as he (or she) likey would have been in the sun most of his, or her life.

The smaller turtle was much harder to keep the pencil lines in the same fashion, so I am hoping with more experience I'll be able to color in smaller things better.

I have named this expression "Turtle" as suggested by 'school zone' who provided the line work for it. Without them, the overall quality would have suffered.

The turtles, I like to believe are actually representations of a singular being, looking back on his past, his childhood and enjoying the memories of a simpler time. When we were told when and where to go. But yet, the turtle remains happy unlike many who think of yesteryears; because while likely missing those days, he is of good standing with age. Happy the past occured, instead of being sad that is gone.

Therefore I believe this art piece represents the duality of man.

End Results

I feel somewhat dissapointed in myself for going out of the lines as much as I have, but overall for my first artistic expression to hit paper in years, I cannot say I am unimpressed with myself; as it is clear to me I have potential. I only had to Google what color turtles eyes are, to keep the realism of the piece.

I believe I may be able, one day, to work as a charecturist at a B-rate amusement park, or perhaps even a state fair.

Thank you for your time.

It's time to stop.

You don't even have to sharpen them... O:

I feel like I go to sleep and wake up and suddenly new technology appears.

What's next video games that don't use CDs?

Really push for an overseas base that isn't some island though. Avoid Kadena unless you like 9pm mandatory curfew and no liquor.

Artistic process
.

As I was finishing shading this. (Linework once again done by school zone) I had a question in my mind. What does this otter represent? The struggle of the modern artist? The plight of an Airman working late night CQ?

But then I realized, this otter actually represents the duality of man. You can see in his smile, as he holds his dinner; he is not chowing down like most ~savage~ animals will. He is holding the plant, preparing himself for the meal to come. Perhaps he is even consider sharing it with a friend? A mate? I like to think so. Even then, perhaps his smile could be malicious, staring down another, weaker otter that can not find plants to eat that are as tasty, or as filling as this one, and his smile is of smug satisfaction.

I felt good coloring this one, until I got to the eyes. I stayed in the lines, and I didn't mix many colors. However, I started thinking. The green eyes I had started with were highly unrealistic and clashed with my previous work.. and in my attempt to fix them to a cool blue, I made a mistake. This was overall an easy piece to finish.

I have named this expression "otter" as suggested by my line artist.
End Result
I, overall, am quite happy with the piece apart from the eyes, which continue to be the bane of my existence as an artist.

I know he's in his second half of the alphabet period, but many die-hard fans wonder when and if he will tackle the first half? Moreoever, would this change radically alter his color palette? The questions here are legion...

...I mean even in the second half of the alphabet period, you can see his growth as an artist. Turtle has tortured strokes. Is this an window to the artists soul? Another veiled "t" reference? From this early period, suddenly....BAM!...Otter storms the scene. The shading here is effortless, almost carefree: the work of a practiced hand. Notice here, there is no date, as if to say, "this work is timeless". Was this intentional? Does this change mark a smaller movement in the larger period?
