Cloud hosting costs - update

Post by Mithreas » Tue Mar 03, 2015 5:13 am

Donation address - arelith.server@gmail.com. Thank you for your support.

---

So, we have our first full month's usage information from Google. At the moment, we're still in the free stage (which is why our overall bill is negative) but it gives us an indication of what our costs will be once the free period ends - about $165 a month.

Interestingly, it shows our bandwidth usage for the month.

42G to Americas
20G to Europe & Africa
0.5G to China
2G to Australia
1G to other APAC countries

That includes forum and website, and is one direction (upload will be less, since the forum uses very very little upload bandwidth).

Thought I'd share, in the interests of transparency. We have $557.61 in the donation account right now, so we're good for a few months yet! Thank you to all who have donated.

Who is playing from China???

Or is this including information from the website too?
Also that's a lot less data being used per month than I would think through a combined average of like ~50 people at all times.

I'm wondering why Canada isn't listed at all especially if China is listed at .5 G. I would of thought Canada would use up more.

Must just be considered USA's hat.

Actually, re-reading, it, it's "Americas" so Canada and Central and South America are included in the USA section. Updating original post :)

It has a tendency to happen with many stats and figures and things, but there is one thing I am wondering; is New Zealand considered part of Australia in terms of the figures above, or is it considered part of other APAC countries?

This month's bill is attached. We were down for a bit, so it comes in at only US $180.94. But this is the first real money out of the account ;)

OMG! What do we have to pay to yank the ad pops that started coming up on the web/forum pages today?? I'll pay it! They are loading literally every... single... page that loads, and they take 10-15 seconds just to finish loading enough so I can close them. And it delays the initial load time of every page. It's making the site almost completely unusable right now, please make it stop!

Uhh- as previously mentioned: Run a anti-malware(adware(spyware)) software.
Sounds like you've got some sort of an infection.

If you've already done so, download something such as Adguard (Beats Adblock (All Variants)).

Huh...

I'm running a Mac, and it's secured and clean.

Maybe the restaurant Wifi hot spot I'm on is loading them. If no one else is seeing it, then I guess it's just me. That would just figure that they'd start cobbling something onto their connection. Time to find a new place for coffee and wifi.

What did you check yer mac with?
Mac's aren't really any bit more immune to viruses than other OS'es are these days.

Macs can still get malware in the form of browser extensions and such. At least, that's how it commonly happens.

AVG to lock it down. AdwareMedic to scan for malware. Both are coming up clean. I'm fully aware that Macs are vulnerable too, and to what. Only mentioning having the Mac because Malwarebytes doesn't come in Mac flavor.

UPDATE: Back home, ad banners gone. BK WiFi hotspot was proxying my connection and loading ads onto the web pages. Lovely BK.

Sorry for digressing the thread. :P

April and May bills attached. Coming in at a pretty steady $180 a month, which is good going.

June's bill attached, coming in at a lower $169.06, which is nice.

The account has another $216 left in it, so we have enough donations in place to cover the next month's bill. Thank you to all who have contributed and continue to do so - if you haven't got your contributor badge yet, drop me a PM with your Paypal name (so I can cross check on the account!) and I'll fix you up.

Cheers :)

Is there a way to set up an auto monthly payment?

I'm lazy and forgetful. Would be nice to set it and forget it :)

Right now, no - we'd have to pay for a premium PayPal account. But posting these updates should be a useful reminder for folks :)
