Re: The absolute state of American culinary arts
Why is this about the state of American culinary arts when the article says "The blessed/wretched flavor is the work of Ice, an ice cream shop in Falkirk, Scotland. Itβs known for other wacky flavors, including Monster Energy Drink and Strongbow cider."
You Americans are so mean to yourselves. Weird food isn't inherently your thing! Here, this happened where I'm from:
https://www.ctvnews.ca/lifestyle/hot-do ... -1.3984356
tl;dr: He sold 60 litres of hot dog water. As in, he boiled hot dogs and sold the water. Apparently it was a performance art piece where he wanted to try doing something utterly ridiculous to prove a point about health claims on products, but that doesn't change the fact that he sold 60 litres of it.

Can totally envision the Andunorian tinkers selling Hot-dog-Water from now on... and goblins going crazy for mayo ice cream...

Didn't read the article, because Paywall. Sorry.
My sister went to visit her inlaws in Edinburgh. They said they were having fish and chips for tea. My sister panicked a little, as we are from an East Coast fishing town and you eat haddock or you eat ****. Cod is for tourists and idiots.
They served battered kippers.
Battered kippers.
Battered.
Kippers.

Re: The absolute state of Scotch culinary arts
Haddock is a meaty sea fish: firm, succulent and sweet. If it smells of anything other than the salt of the sea, it is off.
Cod is a strong, meaty sea fish. It has a distinct flavour of wee if not eaten whilst it is so fresh it still has rigormortis. Distinctly fishy. People who are used to eating slightly off fish (ie, caught more than 12 hours ago) cannot tell the difference between this and haddock.
A kipper is a SMOKED, preserved sea fish, strongly salty, soft, and often bony. It is never meant to be eaten with batter, but preferably with a fresh poached egg, for breakfast.

Since we're talking about Scotland, I discovered yesterday that there's a baked good called "Fly's graveyard". Because the fruits in it look like a bunch of dead flies. Ewwwwww.

With things like battered mars bars, battered kippers are pretty tame.

I can actually see a battered mars bar as being some kind of glorious abomination. I've never had one, but I can imagine it being a sugary asteroid blast shooting you into a greasy black hole heart attack.

The light of Lathander sets, it is the culinary Dawn of the Black Sun. Food is now chaos. Taste has been long forgotten. Men and women fight to impress Him with their abominations. Hamburgers made out of donuts. Salads made out of fruit roll ups. Sushi made out of canned fish. Truly, dark times have come upon us.MoreThanThree wrote: βSat Jul 28, 2018 7:43 pmParty in the forest at midnight wrote: βSat Jul 28, 2018 6:37 pmSince we're talking about Scotland, I discovered yesterday that there's a baked good called "Fly's graveyard". Except I haven't quite caught up, I'm still on the one where they'd just made it to the gnomish town and were still being shown around. Re: The absolute state of Scotch culinary arts
Isn't Scotch egg essentially a boiled egg wrapped in some dough and meat? Those people are barbarians! There's a tribe in Finland who eats meat from a mug. The dish is called the meatmug.
Characters: all poor babies suffering from neglect
Re: The absolute state of Scotch culinary arts
I had vegetarian haggis the other day. No complaints.

Corbin: Its---yes.

Re: The absolute state of Scotch culinary arts
I'm from California, so feel free to be offended, but I always imagined much of Scotland covered in fishing villages populated by 40 year olds that look like they are 60, who eat breakfast at 4 AM consisting of runny fried eggs, cold kipper like fish, and Scotch whisky. Probably a speyside. There's probably a gas lantern at the table too.

and then they come home from a long day of hard work of fishing and giving travellers bug-eyed stares to devour a plate of haggis and mayo icecream.DM Symphony wrote: βMon Jul 30, 2018 1:27 amI'm from California, so feel free to be offended, but I always imagined much of Scotland covered in fishing villages populated by 40 year olds that look like they are 60, who eat breakfast at 4 AM consisting of runny fried eggs, cold kipper like fish, and Scotch whisky.
