In USA Midwest and no lag? Need your help!

Post by CragOrion » Sun Apr 08, 2018 1:50 am

If you've been looking at the bug forum, you might be aware of a lag issue some of us are having connecting to the new EE servers. This is not an issue everyone is having, but still enough people to show its not isolated.

What I need is for someone in USA Midwest region (Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Michigan) who is NOT getting the issue with lag to run a traceroute to the server and paste me the results.

To run the traceroute from a windows computer:

1. open a command prompt (go to start menu, type into the search or into Cortana "cmd" without the quotes and press enter) The command prompt should look like a black box

2. In the command prompt type the following

Code: Select all

tracert game.arelith.com
3. The command will start sending out pings testing each hop on the signal's route to the server. Results will look something like:

Code: Select all

C:\Users\thcrg>tracert game.arelith.com

Tracing route to game.arelith.com [145.239.204.29]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 <1 ms <1 ms 1 ms homeportal [192.168.1.254]
  2 18 ms 17 ms 34 ms 76-219-160-1.lightspeed.iplsin.sbcglobal.net [76.219.160.1]

Trace complete.
Let the process finish.

4. Use your mouse to highlight the results, then press CTRL+C to copy it

5. Paste the results here, or send me a PM with the results pasted in.

This will allow me to compare my results to yours, and to see what route gets lag, and what route doesn't. I'm looking for a way to direct how my signal routes so I can avoid lag, and if I'm able to find a way, or end up having to ask ATT to do it, then the more information I have, the better. And if I can fix it for myself, hopefully I can for others having this problem also.

Thanks

No. That just means whatever you were connecting with doesn't return pings. It's normal.

As a west coast person with lag, if this can be solved, I would be a happy camper! I know there was nothing like this on 1.69 and everything ran like butter, so figuring out what is doing this would be incredible.

https://www.wtfast.com/

This website was suggested to me, and I've been using it today and running without the usual mind numbing lag. The only issue is, it's like a 10$ subscription to play NWN now. I guess for me this is an option I am willing to spend on to play, so I guess if you can afford it -so- far its worked for me. (I'd really research yourself before trying it! It does cost $$ to use it on a 'custom' game.)

I am kind hoping that some of the lag is due to some inefficiency from EE. For example, there are other crashes that happen that are not due to connection issues. So I'll probably use this for a few months- then try EE again without it and see if some updates have managed to smooth out the game play.

Another thing that might help is Direct Connecting. Again I'm still testing what helps and what doesn't but a direct connect for me did help reduce the lag to manageable levels though it was still choppy.

The servers have been generally pretty consistent for me, with pings showing up around 100ms (which I guess is normal for its distance), though the Distant Shores server has been a little laggy lately.

Ohio. No lag. Can't run your tracer route - not running on a Windows OS.

Not AT&T directly, but through a company that utilizes SBC Telecom hardware and lines.

Other users should be able to tell if their non-AT&T companies use AT&T hardware by looking at the host names in a traceroute. It should say sbcglobal.net somewhere. Likely the first hop.

I'm up in New York, am not suffering any lag, and also get my internet from Spectrum - if this helps at all to establish any patterns

As someone who lives in WV I haven't really been experiencing any difference than what I had before, with both being around 100. I use Suddenlink as my ISP.

My lag is terrible when there are lots of players on... So Im guessing it has to do with server side issues. I have 125 Mbps internet and a computer that is way overkill for NWN. I live in Florida. I find it difficult to play when it gets crouded. I cant see transitions, text stops showing up, I cant look in my inventory etc. Is this something that will be fixed in time? Do we need more money for servers or whats the issue at the moment?

The servers are just about as good as it gets for NWN Hosting; these are top of the line. I notice a pattern here for people with high pings to the server are all located mostly in the US so it sounds more like a ISP and DNS issue to the Arelith server.

Not sure how to solve this other than trying a VPN or change ISP. Perhaps you can contact your ISP to ask them if its possible to look into connection for a certain server I really don't know.

I wish I was Network savvy enough to properly understand how WWW is all glued together; it's a bit of a mess.
Not sure if this is gonna help but perhaps flushing one's DNS cache and force it to reroute might help:
https://www.wikihow.com/Flush-DNS

Other ideas might be to look into your Router (If you have one) and have it port forward for the Arelith game server ports.

myself and my roommate tried pretty much everything and finally paid for the subscription to https://www.wtfast.com/ 18.98 for the two computers in our house to be able to play Arelith with no lag. the Wtfast definitly works but you need a 9.99 sub per computer per month which is the only downside it turns the game into a subscription game. so anyone that is having lag issues in the usa this is an option if your willing to shell out for it.

If we have this lag issue now is the current solution to just buy a monthly VPN? Do we think this will ever be fixed or is this just how EE will be?

The solution is to contact your ISP and report the routing issue between your connection and the game server, not to buy access to a VPN. Using a VPN cures the symptom, not the cause.
