Bards and using OOG songs
I have been playing a bard, and occasionally he likes to sing. Now that said, I am not a songwriter myself, and while I may try a bit of it eventually, both myself and Dish are primarily interested in doing covers of other people's songs.
I was wondering if there was any consensus on the best way to do this. What I was thinking of today was that I could perform a song in game, and then message people the credit of the original writer of the song, to give proper credit where it was due, but would this be too disruptive to the rp itself?
Also, are certain songs just too famous to use that it becomes jarring?
So far I've been using largely old blues songs, but have also used a few Terry Pratchett songs and a modified version of Piano Man.
Would Piano Man, The Chain, and Cats in the Cradle be too famous to use? Should I focus on less popular songs, or perhaps songs of certain genres? Is editing out references to modern life and rl locations enough?

Re: Bards and using OOG songs
You should look more towards traditional folk songs. Those can be edited and fit better into the world that someone singing a Metallica cover or something like that.
Katernin Bersk, Chancellor of Divination; Kerri Amblecrown, Paladin of Milil; Xull'kacha Auvry'rae, Redcap Fey-pacted; Sadia yr Thuravya el Bhirax, Priestess of Umberlee; Lissa Whitehorn, Archmage of Artifice

Flashback to that elf that, admidst a high-class elven festival in the feasting hall, performed a screamo punk / metal cover IG.

I'll echo Xerah's advice on traditional songs. Think about the area your character is from and what real-world places influenced it, that could be a good place to start.
Rolled: Helene d'Arque, Sara Lyonall
Shelved: Kels Vetian, Cin ys'Andalis, Saul Haidt

I would avoid pop songs.
I usually make up my songs, or borrow from more lyrical poems and adjust as needed.

In my humble opinion, using a cover of a modern song is no different from naming your character after a famous individual. -Extremely- jarring.
Re: Bards and using OOG songs
You could write anything that rhymes or has a particular rythm to the structure and call it a song in game. It's not like you have to write music with it. My opinion is that it is really disappointing to see OOC songs brought into the game.

Re: Bards and using OOG songs
I am guilty of stealing lines/inspiration from musicals and songs I like and mashing them together into songs my bard character would sing. Things that make sense, though. I don't think it'd really fit if your bard was singing about their hotline bling... lol.
Don't be afraid to step away from the singing route, too. There are other ways to make music/be a bard. Often times when I wasn't sure what I wanted my character to sing, she'd just jam out on her ukulele and I'd describe the mood that way! Interactive stories are also wonderful; tell a story, let the people listening decide what route it takes.

You gain no profit from using lyrycs, you do not even -sing- it literary, you just use it to further role play and make fun for those around, i would not be bothered much by using song. Rather more, you make it known to people who could be later interested in original...

Be classy about it, don't do it too often, try to measure to people that is in hearing range.
The three rules of thumb that works in nearly all the situations when dealing with questionable stuff.
I'm not opposed to covers of RL songs, but I may like one, I may start to avoid it if I hear another.

Re: Bards and using OOG songs
Alright, so hi. I have a character with three bard levels. And when she does sing isntead of using her trumpet, because I enjoy roleplaying those levels out, I tend to use songs like these. Most of these are traditional or specifically made for fantasy stuff. You can change the lyrics a bit too. I also recommend sea shanties. Allllllllllll those assassin creed shanties are great if you change the lyrics a bit.
A song about a dryad and a woodsman. Very lovely song.
A song about those women who turn into seels.
Somber song. It's very beautiful.
This one is nice too.
Literally written about a tiefling. D and d themed tavern song.
Song about a princess and a knight
Literally an hour long compilation of tavern themed songs for fantasy settings. Some really great ones in here.
Far across the land.
City of the dead.
Glashtyn shanty. Beautiful song.
Daughter of the glade folk song
Mushroom song. It's about fey.
Here's one from assassin's creed. Maybe change the lyrics.
A Voltaire song. A lot of Voltaire's songs are really great for a fantasy setting.
Here's another hour long video of bardic songs. Careful with these, some of them are obviously from skyrim.
Anyway, these are just some examples of stuff you can use and change lyrics too. I definitely would use them if I had way more bard levels.

Will add to what everyone said. If you're not into writing your own stuff, stick with what seems fitting to medieval settings. Not modern music.

I think Elfis the bard used to sing Whartown Girl?
Perhaps this was the reasons to why he was removed from Mayfields.

Re: Bards and using OOG songs
I have to admit that my bards from time to time "steals" lyrics from modern bands which write folk music, celtic inspired lyrics, etc. etc. I never use well known bands, and try to use the idea behind the lyrics, rather than the exact words, re-write it into an Arelith context, and only use lyrics that my char could have done.
And yes, I really have been in doubt if this is ok! I never met anyone who OOC'ly told that "hey, that's from [insert band here], isn't it?". And if someone credits me OOC'ly, I confess that it's not myself. So if someone feels offended, and if you're a DM seeing this as cheesy, then please don't hesitate to let me know.
I do however use my own lyrics as much as I can.
I don't do it with ill intentions, but to add fun to the roleplay. Then again, my fun, might be spoiling your fun ...

What about this?

Personally I find this rather nice and find the immersionbreaking part, Richard not being a bard.

My bard sticks to Metallica, Van Halen, and Motley Crue. Enter Sandman really gets the Nomad a rockin.
