The meme may be over exaggerating, but its message is true.
Take that chat with a grain of salt, it can be a quite sarcastic place, and sometimes gets a bit raunchy.

It's not an official chat made nor run by devs, and while there is a small degree of Arelith staff moderation going on there it's very limited.
If you see rule breaches there, despite what some say, you can in fact report it.

My piece of advice: Never mix social media with gameplay, especially on a server like Arelith, It's just asking for trouble.

I have met several of my closest friends doing the opposite of this. Just be safe and intelligent. It is in fact possible to make friends with and even meet people from games in a perfectly safe way with a little bit of forethought.

It's not the 90's anymore. We don't need need to push the propaganda of the big bad scary internet stranger, we just need to teach everyone to take all things on the internet with a grain of salt, including who Sally69 says she is.

I think that what Black Wendigo means is that you shouldn't mix your OOC relationships with actual gameplay and character choices.

Making friends by connecting with people you've met in game is great. Teaming up with those friends when it makes no sense in character is disastrous. Arelith has historically been rife with cliques, so it's a legitimate concern.

Revealing your personal identity to other Arelith players is an extremely risky proposition. Doxxing is a thing that has been perpetrated by people in this community against other people in the community, and it's why I do not use the Arelith Facebook page and never will. Even if the person you reveal your identity to is benign, they might be careless and let it slip out, and, depending on the medium through which you share your identity, hackers (Arelith has had these too) might obtain it. Some obsessive-embittered types (of which Arelith has a fair share) might even go so far as to win your trust and befriend you for the purposes of getting your identity and then either use it to harm or extort you.

So, may I strongly counsel anyone considering whether to share their RL identity with other players to be very, very cautious before doing so.

Oh Im not condemning Discord. Im just warning that it can be toxic. It's supposed to be all OOC, but sometimes people will go on social media and then use that information in game. Or become toxic against a player or faction or something. because the can do that on Discord but not on Arelith forums.

And I would be very careful about sharing RL information over the internet. The big bad scary internet creeps are still out there. There are lots of nice people out there but it only takes one to really ruin things.

And I"m not paranoid. I"ve had good experiences with chatting over the internet. Met nice people.

The Arelith Discord isn't really toxic. It's other Discord servers made by smaller cliques of players that are.

Memes age like wine. They turn to vinegar.

Discord is a bit toxic, you search for controversial characters and players and you will find that they are judged and outright insulted in certain cases.

I don't think there is anything too wrong with Areliths discord, it is a great place to ask question and talk about general things. It just gets a bit too personal at times. As others have said, don't take everything too seriously.
