Making them worse against melee characters and enhanced against stealth-based characters is one of the most confusing aspects of the current configuration. I think the former made perfect sense with the concept of a "sword saint", the latter not so much. Thus my high school guidance counselor jokes, because why should they be good at listening???
They're good at listening because they have no access to True Seeing. A sizable spot/listen boost, with some skill investment, allows them to still counter those skills, but not easily. It's a balance concern. If you're looking for a lore/role play justification... how many old kung fu movies are there where the old master makes his student fight blindfolded to learn to use all of his senses equally? Same concept.

Also, fun fact: that kind of training is still used in both sparring and forms, for memory and awareness.

Dreams does Kung Fu IRL. Sourced.

To be fair, to have made an original kensai your character has to be around, what, 5-6 years old?

Characters are going to be hurt by changes when they exist for that long. That's just to be expected.
