Another safety tip, more of a general one but it happened more then once in Houston, so;
If you ever see someone being electrocuted, don't go near them, don't go help them. Odds are very high there's still current and if you get near them you're just going down too. This is even more important when entering places with flooding. If the water is energized and you put your foot in it then your leg is now a great path to ground.

Will update OP.
It's closer to Tampa again. Offer I made last page to take someone with me or an offer to join my convoy to the hotel my family's got stands. Additionally if we don't evac but you're on the bad part of the state I have a sofa you can use, that's sort of a 'do or die' option for you but it's available as I'd rather offer the space then think of someone stuck in cat v winds.

I'm evacuating tonight to a hotel out of state kindly provided by my company, should I empty and unplug my refrigetator and the other big electronics? No idea on the rules of these sort of things!
Please don't feed my sister.

Re: Hurricane Irma thread
I would personally. Please be safe, your in my heart and thoughts.
Re: Hurricane Irma thread
If you're going to evac. Trip the breaker before you leave so that electricity isn't live in your home. Ziplock bag your important documents and electronics if possible, and take your computer(s) with you.
If you are staying home to weather it, stock up on water however possible as commie suggested, and get enough food to last at least a week. I highly recommend SPAM and canned soups. They don't need refrigeration, and a single can of spam and 2 cans of soup will keep a grown man going for roughly a day if you ration it, so you can make those supplies last. Get a flashlight, and some candles. Odds are good you'll lose power.

Do not totally trust tracks at this point, it's totally up in the air.

One coast, or the other, or right up the spine of FL is up in the air. The storm is so wide the margin for error could put the eyewall on either coast or out to sea on either side.
Evac when they say evac.
Put your faith in the local officials. Rick Scott so far has done a fantastic job handling this evac process and getting gas/water in. If it hits the center and tracks up it's the biggest evac ever. Be careful and do as they say.

As an aside, I am quite done with FL after this experience and will be making plans to move out of this cesspool following this tropical event.

Funny thing, I'm in Florida right now visiting family. Hopefully my flight back home to NJ doesn't get cancelled tomorrow, or I'm hunkering down! Be safe, guys!

I would be suprised if they cancel any outgoing flights.woodbreeze wrote:Funny thing, I'm in Florida right now visiting family. Hopefully my flight back home to NJ doesn't get cancelled tomorrow, or I'm hunkering down! Be safe, guys!
P.S. Don't miss that flight.
If this storm hits Miami and tracks up all of central Florida (as is currently forecasted) estimates of damage exceed 1 trillion USD.
Katrina was 110 billion, for comparison.
Re: Hurricane Irma thread
Also I used an app called 'GasBuddy' and it helped me and a family member find gas and top off.
Would recommend!
Also a guy at the pump told me the dude that was in my spot before me was filling trash bins with gasoline.

Re: Hurricane Irma thread
Yeah gas is going to be unheard of for a while.
Largest evacuation in Miamis history currently underway. No water, gas, sandbags or anything really other than perishables left down here in homestead.

Re: Hurricane Irma thread
Also my apologies to anyone if this thread seems spammy there's just a lot of info coming out and I'm trying to post new stuff as I get it.
Re: Hurricane Irma thread
Good tip if you're planning to evacuate. Take a plastic cup and fill it 1/2 way with water. Get a quarter (that is, 25 cents) and put it in the freezer next to the cup of water. In a few hours, once they're both frozen, put the quarter on top of the ice in the cup.
When you come back after your evac, if the quarter is at the bottom of the cup, you know your freezer thawed and re-froze. If it's still on top, your food is good to go.

Hope you're doing alright folks.
