Things that really grind your gears...

Post by Thera » Wed Feb 01, 2017 8:55 am

A little thread for the things that just ...really... get to you when you are playing.

NOTE: This thread isn't about complaining about something that you expect to be fixed, or about other players (unless it's really in good jest). Just the ironic little things that leave you frustrated and needing to log off for a little bit.

I'll get it started. Don't you just hate when you finally level, and then you fail a couple of simple enchantment basin additions that knock you back to the previous level. I know it's only ~500 ish XP, but it's soooooooooooooo frustrating!

When I level and then get involved in deep roleplay so I cannot level up and my RPR tick isn't counting!

If I just... level during the conversation... maybe no-one will -- gah, I was asked a question! *cancels level up*

Yes, xp loss for enchanting hurts! I recommend going without enchanting things when necessary.

-Watching players struggle to raise their RPR for years and fail, only to watch them become disillusioned and become meme style players because why bother.
-Chest loot
-The chest loot matrix
-Seriously why even put a chest in an epic lvl 21+ dungeon if its going to give you +1 plate?
-that morale hit of picking a lock and finding less gold in the chest than is on the corpses of any of the mobs in the same room.
-The cost of basic healing potions
-How utterly broken and worthless craft potion is as a feat
-How nescessary UMD is to actually doing well at mid-high epics.
-empty artefact chests(if its going to be empty, at least just have it spawn some crap chest loot. That'd be better than feeling like the entire trip was for absolutely nothing)
-Mobs with absurd, game breaking saves.
-THAT OROG IN THE SPIDERS WEB BATHS(I kill him literally every time I'm down there simply because its the only way to keep him from being creepy or awkwardly lingering)
Plays: Durvayas(deleted), Marco(deleted), Hounynrae(NPC), Sinithra Auvry'ndal(rolled), Rauvlin Barrith(Active), Madeline Clavelle(Shelved)

Unlocking a container only to find it has an infinite-trap pasted on it.

No way to use said infinite-trap to create perpetual energy machine to power all of Arelith.

Oh no. I spawned a small group of demi-gods. I hope they don't instabuff with melfs- God damnit.

Who touched my character sheet?

Being the "Wanderer" from place to place, desperate for RP. Ohmygosh! I see someone. Oh, all I get is *nods*. Back to wandering.

Enchantment basin.

"What do you mean you can't cast it? You must be a Warlock or something. Get her!"

*Your disguise was not broken* "Oh, hey. I recognized your voice"

A large group of OOC friends just moved into town. Tell the Mayor to pack their crap.

Artifacts.

Artifact hunters.

Not being able to hunt artifacts on any character.

Not having artifacts on any character.

Rolling 1 on fear aura.

Rolling 1 on fear aura after getting a god-save.

Fear wore off. Got a god-save. Damnit, let me out of this corner, noooo!

Want to create RP item. Enchant weight reduction so I can edit name and description. Damnit, used up my god-save.

Oh no! I suddenly regret not taking several naps today. Hrrrrnnngh! Beeeee. Riiiiiight. Baaaaaack. *Crawls to Nomad*.

I think this person is cybering on me. Are you trying to get me banned? I need an adult. I NEED AN ADULT!!

Not sure if halfling or slutty child.

Severe lack of sassy half-orc women. </3 R.I.P

"Pft. I die all the time. It's no big deal. Let's go hunting in HELL!"

Why are we always running? Slow down! Wait for me! Guys? Hello? ... Oh ._.

Yes, I make scrolls for educational purposes. "I need twenty time-stops." Get out!

Oh, you killed NamedBossMob? Me too. I kill NamedBossMob all the time. He's easy... and definitely not a lich.

My character isn't afraid of anything.

Hey guys, I was assassinated so I can't be the Mayor anymore. Anyway... want to go hunting?

Limited cloth fashion choices. Sorry, there's only several shirt styles you're allowed to wear on this island, pick the three that won't get you arrested or spat on. Yes, they're all ugly.

Halflings have square butts. I bet you never noticed. Adjust your camera angle. They have square butts.

Aah. Finally. The description is finished. It took me hours but finally it's finish- Nooo! Typo! Noooooo!

Why won't you share the goblins with me? T_T

Having little dolly items your character made of their friends, and having them be wiped over when picking up new dollies. </3

C- .. c-... can w- we please take a moment to rest? Please? Maybe? I only have a limited amount of spells. "Loser. We hate you. Your entire life's labor has been a waste of all our time!" T_T okay.

*He reaches forward and snaps your neck deftly and without any resistance from you. You fall dead to the ground and the entirety of your bank account is forwarded to your murderer* Hey. I think you're god emoting. "HOW DARE YOU!?".

Love triangles.

Love squares.

Love decagons.

Love decahedrons.

Being murdered centimeters away from a guard.

Don't worry. I turned the mages to stone, they won't be giving us any troub- Oh god. They're taking naps! It wore off! Run! RUN!

"This home is owned by <You Have Literally Never Seen Me Online In The Past Ten RL Years McGee>" Oh ._.

I'm making a new character. It's just like my old character(s) but better at killing you.

These badgers have coins in their bellies! .. And these bears too! And these beetles! Wheeeee! :D

We're getting rid of circle-grinds. From now on, they will be an assortment of irregular shapes.

All my paths are blocked by sandstorms! I accept my new life as a desert hermit.

Brow is the forehead, and not another word for eyebrow.

When a PC 'lifts a brow,' it creates a strange mental image.

I usually see this on the forums and it's grammatically incorrect:

"The boss will decide whom will get a raise this year."

Who, not whom. The reason? The relative pronoun "who" is taking an active verb, so it's put in the nominative case, not the accusative case. It's not the object of the verb "decide"; in this case, a verb like "decide" gets its own clause. Since it takes its own verb ("will get") it should be treated as though it were the subject of its own sentence.

I mean, it is a synonym for eyebrow though.

brow1
braʊ/
noun
noun: brow; plural noun: brows

1.
a person's forehead.
"he wiped his brow"
synonyms: forehead, temple; frons
"the doctor wiped his brow with his handkerchief"
2.
an eyebrow.
"his brows lifted in surprise"
synonyms: eyebrow
"his eyes were deep set beneath heavy black brows"

Another huge pet peeve, which I often see on the server:

"He would sigh."

Would he? Whoever started this fad is a monster.

The moment an artifact chest comes into existence, it is blown up by some joker with a gonne.

Cannot. Resist.

It's both.

1.
a person's forehead.
"he wiped his brow"
synonyms: forehead, temple; frons
"the doctor wiped his brow with his handkerchief"

2.
an eyebrow.
"his brows lifted in surprise"
synonyms: eyebrow
"his eyes were deep set beneath heavy black brows"

3.
the summit of a hill or pass.
"the cottages were built on the brow of a hill"
synonyms: summit, peak, top, mountaintop, crest, crown, tip, head, pinnacle, apex, vertex, apogee
"the beagles tumbled over the brow of the hill"
antonyms: bottom
Origin

Old English brū ‘eyelash, eyebrow’, of Germanic origin. Current senses arose in Middle English; compare with brae.

Fortunately, some of the newer artifact chests appear to be indestructible. Not sure if this is by design, but I prefer it that way.

Actually, the Oxford dictionary would beg to differ.

Now as to things that grind the gears...

-Saves at such an extraordinarily high point that a master of magic can only sigh and remember the good old days in the lower levels when their magic had a decent chance at not being saved. Then again, they can always roam through the lower level areas to giggle at their magic working as one would expect.

-The enchantment basin

-Walking through the Arelith Forest and suddenly having three massive grizzlies keep knocking down and mauling your epic level Fighter/WM >.> Yeah, that is one of those stories one tells with a wince even years later.

-If Valor Were Inches for the irrational hatred of dwarves. Silliness!

-Succeeding in knowing the pain of losing to a 5% roll (such as needing to roll a 1 to fail a save) 80% of the time, whilst succeeding a 5% roll 0% of the time when desired.

-And of course the obligatory "not getting what I want" and sucking it up like an adult only to go and kick cats later on, because that is just what happens. Sadly, when I hit the cats, they hit back. And usually win :P

I'd like to add stacking +1 universal saves on all gear items to this list.
