Rental ship sinking causes lockout, others can still use

So a big problem right now is there's not enough ships for the growing demand of people wanting to sail. It's very common to struggle with getting rental ships, and even worse when several of them sink.

Is it possible to lock people out of using a rental ship until serverup and then make the ship available for other people to use? This way only the people who sank it get locked out, and other people can still sail.

Things like this already exist for runic chests so I figure there's some sort of framework. Maybe the ship can keep track of who boarded it?
