Speaking Alert/Bubble

Post by WanderingPoet » Sun Jan 14, 2018 5:29 am

RPing in NWN1/2 has always had one glaring problem, not knowing when people are replying or have finished talking. So: Add a speech bubble [...] - or an exclamation mark over the heads of anyone that is typing. It can even be something less subtle, like a glow around the head, etc.

This would let people see that a person is still talking and let us wait without actually giving an extra 30 seconds to allow people to finish. It'd also help with two characters talking at the same time, and asking questions to groups.

Inner workings:
- Player presses space key while in the chat area(or there is text in the chat area), and text area doesn't include a 'tell': bubble/mark appears.
- Player presses enter key while bubble/mark is showing, bubble/mark disappears

Simple! The reason for making it the space key is that Space doesn't do anything outside of chat - which reduces the number of times/places we have to check. Then doing a check on the chat area to see if there is text prevents accidental hitting of the key showing the bubble/mark, while also preventing it from showing when you're in the journal. We wouldn't want it to appear from tells as you're not actually talking, and it allows you to write/etc from Tells rather than whispers if you don't want to look like you're talking when you're not. Making the enter key just remove it no matter what mode prevents it from getting stuck, and makes it easy to remove.

Laughter, encouragement, play - not simply just for fools.
These tools reveal,
More is learned,
From another in an hour of play,
Than in a year of contention.

Its a nice idea, but I doubt it is possible within the limitations of NWN.
