1. To prevent metagaming, you will know if they did or not break your disguise
2. When surrounded by 4 players and 6 NPC's its impossible to tell.

Just to point out: this will permit metagaming as well. I'm thinking of situations where you see three people and get a message saying that a fourth person broke your disguise, now you know immediately (OOCly, not ICly) not just that there is an undetected character in the area, but specifically who it is. That definitely affects peoples' roleplay, whether or not we want it to.
