Kensai Idea: Dynamic Kensai

Post by Yellena » Sun Jul 23, 2017 5:22 pm

As an idea to make it more versatile, fun and still limiting, I came with the proposals below.

The Kensai here remembers something like a a character with Vow of Poverty. It's a feat that gives you a lot of benefits but you can't wear magic or expensive items. Here is the usual VoP progression:

Character Level Benefits
1st- AC bonus +4
2nd- Bonus exalted feat
3rd- AC bonus +5, endure elements
4th- Exalted strike +1 (magic), bonus exalted feat
5th- Sustenance
6th- AC bonus +6, deflection +1, bonus exalted feat
7th- Resistance +1, ability score enhancement +2
8th- Natural armor +1, mind shielding, bonus exalted feat
9th- AC bonus +7
10th- Exalted strike +2 (good), damage reduction 5/magic, bonus exalted feat
11th- Ability score enhancement +4/+2
12th- AC bonus +8, deflection +2, greater sustenance, bonus exalted feat
13th- Resistance +2, energy resistance 5
14th- Exalted strike +3, freedom of movement, bonus exalted feat
15th- AC bonus +9, ability score enhancement +6/+4/+2, damage reduction 5/evil
16th- Natural armor +2, bonus exalted feat
17th- Exalted strike +4, resistance +3, regeneration
18th- AC bonus +10, deflection +3, true seeing, bonus exalted feat
19th- Ability score enhancement +8/+6/+4/+2, damage reduction 10/evil
20th- Exalted strike +5, energy resistance 15, bonus exalted feat

Of course, this would be greatly unbalanced here. But we could extract some of it's concept in improving Kensai.

SUGGESTION:

●Kensais can be of any class, but can't use magic or magic items. They also receive great penalty with ranged weapons (except throwing weapons), but gets a bonus with melee attacks.

●Any character can become a Kensai, but doing so will block all the spellcasting that the class may have. That said, a mage or Bard kensai can be a bad idea, while a Ranger or Paladin could use some of its benefits in exchange of their spellcasting and spell-like abilities.

●The Kensai receives -10 AB when using ranged weapons.

●The Kensai starts with two of the following bonuses at Lvl 1:
-AC Bonus (Dodge) and Uncanny Dodge: +1/6lvl
-Strike Bonus: +2 AB/DMG, +1/10lvl (works like Divine Favor)
-Ability Bonus (Highest of STR or DEX, and CON): +2 (STR/DEX) and CON, +1/7lvl
-Regeneration: 2, +2/7lvl
-Save Bonus: +1, +1/7lvl
-Skill Bonus: +10 to (1+1/10lvl) skill(s) you have ranks on (chosen in dialog).
-Spell Resistance: 10+Lvl
-Haste
-Freedom
-True Seeing (or Blind Sense)
-Mind Immunity
-Level and Attribute Drain Immunity
-Death Effect Immunity

●Every 5~6 levels, the Kensai can take an extra ability from the list.

●Every time the Kensai completes a full rest (meditation), a dialog opens and allows it to change the chosen abilities for the day.
