Lore on Skal (NWNEE Server Setting)

The Island
-------------

Skal is one of the more remote islands on the far-flung Arelithian archipelago. Due to its northern location, polar sea currents, and local wind patterns, Skal is a cold and wintry location. The island is three parts ice and one part frost-bitten tundra.

Skal is difficult to reach by ship. It has only one charted harbor suitable for deep-hulled vessels. Due to ice flows, this harbor can only be used by seagoing craft during mild summers.

The isle is dominated by three large hills, each one constituting a distinct region. These regions are Dun Umra, Dun Torun, and Dun Magog.

Dun Umra is the central hill, and the east side of it embraces the one charted harbor. It is where Skaljard is located, the only known town on Skal. The western slopes of the hill hold an abandoned tin mine and some ancient barrows, now haunted.

Don Torun is the southern hill, and afflicted with harsh weather and inhospitable terrain. It is the least explored of the three regions.

Dun Magog is a large northern hill, which has forested slopes, steep canyons, and is inhabited by tribes of monster races - including goblins, minotaurs, mountain ogres, harpies and mountain orcs.

The Town
------------

The one settlement on Skal is a town called Skaljard. Some locals simply call it Skal for short, leading outsiders to conflate the town with the island.

Skaljard was founded a hundred years ago by refugees and exiles from the Moonshae Isles, fleeing intercene warfare between Northmen and Ffolk. Since then, the population has steadily dwindled, occasionally boosted by shipwreck survivors, refugees from elsewhere, and - briefly - a valuable tin mine in western Dun Umra.

The dying settlement has recently gotten a fresh lease of life due to the arrival of mysterious Artificiers offering a lucrative new trade.

The Players
----------------

New PCs will be arriving in Skaljard by dock, either from one of the rare ships that anchor there during the summer months, or due to a sea voyage gone wrong. The ocean around Skal contains many dangers, and it's not unusual for storms to drive passenger ships into its icy shores.
