How do you tend plants?

I see this gives piety for those who follow nature dieties, but I don't understand the process.

If you are a ranger or druid class who worship a god of Nature deity, then whenever you 'touch' (open) a plant fixture (berry bush, fruit bush, nut bush, cotton bush ect) you gain peity. I think this also causes the items that spawn in that bush to spawn in a higher quantity or more frequenly. And of course you can still take the fruit/berry out if you want.
