The Survivor

Post by SwampFoot » Sat Jan 10, 2015 10:59 pm

This is not a build I am looking to make any time soon as I am having fun on my Warlock, but....

It's build time! Lets see someone make a character with the following traits:

High AC

High Constitution/HP

High Saves(all of them)

DR(a significant amount)

Note: AB is not a requirement. The build is intended to be able to wade into any type of battle and come out unscathed. Let that weapon master or barbarian in the group worry about dealing damage. Also, UMD or spell casting is an acceptable means to avoid damage by means of stoneskin, and spell negating wards.

Bard/Paladin/DD. (better yet as a favoured soul. but take your pick.)

Con/Cha based. Grab Divine Might and Shield, take as many bard levels as you want to unlock what spell circle (I'd advise getting haste under your belt, than not much more.) You don't need more than 4 paladin, unless you want more. So, off the top of my head,

some sort of 8 bard/4 paladin/8 DD pre-epic. Maybe something like 11 bard/4 paladin/15 DD, at endgame.

Paladin gives you godly saves.

Overall, not bad. All bard/paladins are grotesquely strong. Your biggest bane will be the bane of (almost) all melee-casters:

1. prep time
2. a mord to shut you down

Thankfully, dispels do not dispel Divine Might/Shield which will be your bread and butter. All other spells will just be spice on the cuisine of DWARVEN PHALANX.

edit: the alternative, is a straight-up fighter who takes tons of Save feats and is all about gear. make it Con-based for Epic Damage Reduction, and whamo. With the new fighter changes, you can probably build a really competent level 30 fighter- if you realize Save feats are 100% necessary.

If you don't want to be a dwarf, you can meet most of those prerequisites with - ironically - another Warlock. I'm not so sure about the high AC (Feylock might help with that, but the Fiendlock summons are almost too nice to pass up) but you can get the rest of it easily.

Get your base CON up to 21+ (You can easily swing 18 at the start with gifts, and have it there by level 12) and invest 3 epic feats into Epic Damage Reduction. With 30 Bard, I believe you should end up with 24/- DR then.

Bards get good Reflex and Will saves, so only your Fortitude should be lagging behind - but probably will be boosted up to similar levels by your outrageous CON score. You can augment these further with Save feats, universal save gear, and a hearty investment in Spellcraft (just putting 30 points in gets you +6 saves vs. spells, and saves vs. spells are what ends up being the most important, usually!)

AB hardly matters when you're making touch attacks to deal a rogue's sneak attack damage in elemental damage (which you can shift up and down at will!) every single round (twice per round if you can get hasted!)

To recap, Pros:
  • High HP from having 21+ CON (w/22 base CON + 12 from spells/gear, you should have 540 HP at L30)
  • Up to 24/- DR, with 15/- DR against three elements built in
  • AB doesn't matter as much, because of easily spammable touch attacks that deal respectable damage.
  • Damage type can be changed on the fly, to adapt to situations.
  • Your only "weak" save shored up by insane CON score (with CON as high as it is, you should end up with at least 23 Fortitude, 17 Reflex, 17 Will; Reflex and Will can get extra boosts from your other stats, and you can boost all of them by up to like +10 using gear/feats, with an additional +6-10 vs. Spells from Spellcraft)
  • Infinite spellcasting of an extremely limited spell list (Feylocks get better melee combat buffs, Fiendlocks get access to relatively powerful summons for PvE)
  • Access to Tumble and UMD for extra AC and WANDS!
Cons:
  • Saves vs. Non-spells will simply be on the high end of medium. You might fail a few saving throws vs. traps/disease/etc
  • Monks and DEX builds make you cry, because of their high touch AC. Then again, with 24/- DR, you'll probably absorb between half to most of the damage from each swing they make.
  • SR will also make you cry, because of a chance of negating all of your damage.
  • Energy Resistance spells will absorb one or two blasts from you, early on. You'll shred through them later, but your reliance on Energy damage will make them a strong defense in early PvE.
That said, you'll be monstrously strong in PvE. I don't think there's much a Warlock can't handle, especially teamed up with a strong heavyhitter.

Cleric 12/ Dwarven Defender 18

Gives you +4 magic vestment for armor and shield (carry brass), gives you plate and tower shield proficiencies, gives you 312 base HP before any CON modifier, gives you divine power, divine favor, bless, death ward, endurance, shielf of faith... oh yeah! And the heal spell on top of 21/- DR, and immunity to sneak attacks so long as you're attacking something.

Starting stats should be somewhere in this ballpark - use gifts to achieve as needed.
Str: 13 (+1 at level 28 for final score of 14)
Dex: 12
Con: 18 (+6 through levelling up for a base of 24 bringing the build up to 522 hp before magical bonuses)
Int: 14 (trust me, skill points are important to survival)
Wis: 16
Cha: 10

Bulletpoints about feats:
7 x Non-Epic Feats
4 x Epic Feats
2 x Epic Bonus Feats (Dwarven Defender levels 14 and 18)

Vital Non-Epic Feats
Dodge
Toughness
Expertise
Improved Expertise
3 feats to taste. (Luck of Heroes, maybe a weapon focus and improved crit?)

Vital Epic Feats
Epic Damage Reduction (x3 for 9/- DR that stacks with your 12/- from Dwarven Defender)
Armor Skin
Two Epic Feats to taste

Vital Skill Maneuvers
Hold one skill point per level at all non-cleric levels for your final level of cleric to get your spellcraft score to 30 (+6 saving throws vs. spells.)
Maximize Discipline- you are worthless on your back.

Maximize Concentration
Split your remaining skill point per level between Heal and Lore as you see fit.

Domains: Earth, Strength (Stoneskin, Divine Power at level 3, Energy Buffer, and Divine Strength.

Fully buffed, you will have 702 HP, 21/- DR, 10/+5 DR for 100 points of DR, 40/- Against Energy, 10+8+3+4+4+4+2+1+1 = 37 AC. Add boots with +2 dodge AC for 39, add haste for 43, add Defensive stance for 47, or ignore defensive stance and add Improved expertise for 53.

This does not count any bard buffs,or your ability to squeeze 3 more ac out from a level 15 cleric that is buffing you instead.
And Heal. All 702 HP of it.
Bane's tyranny is known throughout the continent, and his is the image most seen as the face of evil.

Palemaster with epic DR feat (spellcraft for saves vs spells). Maybe barbarian for more DR. You can basically build Dartak again.
With palemaster levels, DR becomes more of a secondary defense against high-ab, low-dmg attacks.
