Ocean distances and ship speeds

Post by MoreThanThree » Wed Jun 20, 2018 2:11 am

1. How far away from various points on the "mainland" (Moonshaes, Waterdeep, Cormyr, Baldur's Gate, and Amn specifically) to Arelith?
2. How fast can most ships travel?
3. How much OOC time would trips from arelith to the mainland and back take?

idk about 1 and 3, but I was curious and this is what about 2 hours of research came up with for #2- This is tough. there’s a LOT of factors that affect speed. For one, are we assuming Arelith 1372= real life 1372? Because if we’re getting real historically accurate “fast” medieval boats (caravels) weren’t developed until the mid-1400s, , which means water travel was limited to coastal hugging boats that at most went 3-4 knots per hour. *deep breath*
But if we are in “vague magical medieval times” we could just assume that the faster boats exist, which could up speeds to potentially 8 knots in best conditions. Googleing the average speed of caravels ended up with 4 knots, which was about 90-100 miles a day.

One clue I've found is that it took Cordell's expedition about forty days to reach Maztica.

In Forgotten Realms Lore, the dates don't really correlate to Gregorian Calendar dates. It's safe to assume based on everything I've read, the Realms are much further along in technology than real world 1372, probably just before the Renaissance Era if not early Renaissance.

4. Where'd that handy map that had the tiny speck of Arelith compared against the entire Forgotten Realms?
