If so, are there any recommendations of class combos to achieve a similar effect?
How well does (in new atmosphere) Paladin and Sorceror synergize for the purpose of being a hybrid melee/caster?
Is Spellsword still disabled?

Still disabled..
Bard/paladin or blackguard is better if you want spells and melee. Sorcerer with a few paladin levels is good for incredibly high saves, divine shield and wearing armor but you're going to want to be a caster, not a fighter. Neither is as fun as a spellsword but it may be a while before it's fixed.
