Permanent Essences
Do Perma Essences for weapons add to the required level anymore? I feel like I remember seeing that they removed this but I could easily be mistaken.

And semi-related as I've always wondered having never used one, do defensive essences work like damage essences?
That is, do defensive essences overwrite existing resistances? Do they just overwrite #/- elemental resistances? Can you enchant a few and then essences it for another one, or does it have to be essences then enchant a few?

Replace like damage.
Obviously you can't have an item with /5 to all energy damages.
