Undead in disguise

Post by PleasantSolitude » Fri Nov 17, 2017 12:19 pm

I tried searching for similar threads and found nothing covering this topic. So here's my question.

Disguising a summoned undead, is that even possible?

For example; a Necromancee must pass through a town with his minions and since suitible corpses don't grow on trees (I get that in nwn you just unsummon and resummon but realistically speaking) he doesn't want to discard them.

Covering them in robes and a helmet/hood would suffice to hide appearance.

It would still be easy to detect for an observant player. Shambling walk, the smell, possible sounds or just mere dark aura eminating from the seemingly mindless hooded slaves following a person.

But theoretically speaking it should be possible to disguise an undead minion for a very limited time.

So moving on to practicality: Could this even be implemented in roleplay? I suspect walking into/through a town with a zombie would attract a horde of Goody Mcsmites to carry out justice. And emoting *the zombie is dressed in robes* would probably come too late.

Or is this already a thing and am I overanalyzing it too soon?

Usually it goes by "What you see is what you get" which also goes for race and appearance and all that. So if you march into town people will see your zombies, and probably react accordingly.

You could translate it as, The smell revealed them, the weird groaning.. or some one saw the rotten skin took it away.

It's the same as trying to disguise as a hin while you have a kobold model, people can go along with it if they want to, but they are free to just interpret what they're seeing as the truth as well.

There is no mechanical way to disguise undead.
As the other posters have said - What You See is What You Get.

This- basically.
This too shall pass.

LMAO, seems legit.

Thanks for the replies - it is as I expected then! But it was nice to actually hear other people's thoughts on the matter.

I think the question most players would be asking is why the necromancer is bringing summoned undead into town, other than wanting to start a fight?

I can think of a few situations.
For example: I can imagine that some necromancers want to experiment with the limitations of their abilities, much like serial killers do. A sort of escalation over time and slowly weighing down the scale towards hubris.

Yeah, that sounds a lot like starting a fight. Keep in mind that, in all likelihood, people have seen something like this happen before and are already tired of it.

"Oye! You! Why's that zombie following you?"
"Zombie! That's no zombie! That's my brother.'
'Your brother eh? His leg's fallen off!'
'He's a pirate good sir. Pirate's legs fall off all the time. Shiver me timbers and all that.'
'And what about his skin? why does he look all greenish?'
'Scurvy. Very common on the high seas.'
'Hrm. Got anything to say for yourself, pirate?'
'Ughhhhhhh....'
'What? What was that moan! Pirates don't moan!'
'Moan? Oh no good sir. That wasn't a moan. He didn't go 'Ughhhhh... he went 'arrrrr!' Pirates go 'Arrr' all the time. Very common. It's part of his sea lingo.'
'Hrn... well... seems legit... Alright. Come on through.'
'Thank you ever so much. Onwards Harold!'
'Harold? Wait - a pirate called Harold? Ooooh... hold on a moment...'
This too shall pass.
