Questions I Have, and About Me.

If i want to play a politician, lawyer, or something of that sorts how do i go about it?

I've noticed most people in Cordor are mages, is that the OP class here?

How do i start out on crafting, I haven't found much on trades in Cordor, like tanning acid etc.

How much control do players have?

Most players here are a great deal higher level then i am, how am i suppose to increase my level by myself? I've slain rats, lunatics and have done the delivery mission in Cordor. Maybe it's not as fast as i'd like, just use to playing a higher level rogue.

What is the 5% rule?

What is not allowed besides the basic rules?

How Diverse are DM events. Example: The party is headed to kill Drow, a couple of rogues from one of the local guilds, sneak past as they battle and take all the loot they were safe guarding.
OR
The DM plots out people walking a whole cave, but there is a few rocks from a cave in, blocking a simpler path, could the players try to get pass the debris, even though mechanics would not allow?
OR
As a high level diplomatic rogue, a man wants to try to use corruption to run scams on players or DM controlled NPCs, or just over all corruption.

Are there player owned and ran guilds? What comes with joining a guild?

Anything else i should know being new here?

A little about myself OOC:
I intend to make this server my home, after recently looking for a new place. I use to play on Thain, and want a change for reasons that would sound as slander. I'm eighteen and usually play NWN with a good friend of mine who is around the same age as me, we try to play more of the roguish type characters. I'm still in high school and have a job so my availability is limited but when i do play i want to play to contribute most to the server whenever i can. Thanks for listening.

Known Characters i play:
Tom Krow

Just some reassurance:
I read the forums as much as i can, and try to learn on my own. This i believe is just a quicker way of learning.

Welcome to Arelith! What he said, mostly. You can be a politician by the way, but you need to run for election against other PCs. It's competitive.

The best way to get more of a foothold in the world is to form relationships with other characters, by joining a faction or by simply meeting people. It takes time but you're just starting out!

Mages are always versatile and powerful.
Crafting: Ask IC.
"Control"?
You aren't really supposed to increase your level by yourself. It's an RPing, multiplayer game. Go around, make some friends, die together at the first overpowered spawn. Rant about it in the forum. Try again and do it better.

"Allowed". If your common sense says "mm, this looks iffy, maybe I shooooooouldn't be doing it", you probably shouldn't be doing it.
Every DM has their own style to run their events. So they are as diverse as the DMs running. From very flat PnP "I want to do this, I roll for this", to more subtle, loose approaches without any real hand-holding.
"Factions" are more OOC tags to facilitate communication between players and organize events than having any real, mechanical benefit. It's what you make of it.

My advice:
Don't ask in the forums. Play the game.
You will learn faster that way, and you may have fun in the process.

Welcome.

I recommend using the wiki, too. Also IC > forums.

Create a (any) character, and speak to people in settlements, organisations, etc. and just find out how relations work IC.

Having a convincing high-cha, high-int character obvious helps, but there's no prerequisite whatsoever. Just get into it.

CaptainCeicro wrote:I've noticed most people in Cordor are mages, is that the OP class here?
People used to say playing a wizard is like playing Arelith on Easy mode.

My personal impression is that there are more cleric and WM builds, can't really say there's an excess of mages.

Pick a trade in your trade skill book (or via the rest menu), read the recipes. Alternatively, check the wiki. It's advisable to pick a trade that benefits your characters (e.g. someone wearing heavy armour might be better off focusing on smithing over tailoring). Ask around IC where you find resources to work with.

Lots, and little.

CaptainCeicro wrote: Most players here are a great deal higher level then i am, how am i suppose to increase my level by myself? I've slain rats, lunatics and have done the delivery mission in Cordor. Maybe it's not as fast as i'd like, just use to playing a higher level rogue.
Perhaps you are unlucky with your playtime. Normally there are characters of different level ranges about.

XP rate is pretty low on Arelith, but that's not a bad thing.

CaptainCeicro wrote:What is the 5% rule?
It's a 5% roll, rather than a 5% rule. When you delete a character in certain level ranges (see wiki), you get a reward based on chance. This reward can be applied to new characters, and acts as some sort of boon. There's a 5% chance that you get the chance to do something special with the next character of your choosing. Like, playing a normally forbidden race or w/e.

CaptainCeicro wrote:What is not allowed besides the basic rules?
Just keep in mind that we're all here to have fun. Anything that gives you an unfair advantage over others or is detrimental to the overall sportsmanship is not okay. The small specific 'rules' (I would rather say handling) can be worked out on the go.

DM events can really range from a few additional spawns to server-wide, elaborate plots. Some are emotional. Others are funny. Some have a long-lasting impact on your character, some affect areas or settlements. There's no way to generalise.

CaptainCeicro wrote:Are there player owned and ran guilds? What comes with joining a guild?
Yes.

And that differs from guild to guild. Some have guildhouses. Some pay wages. Some kill people. Others just sit and talk. Some just use up data base capacity.

Have fun!

I think bards are very powerful on Arelith-- probably moreseo than rogues for similar concepts-- and are a good base class for political characters Having high skills here is much more useful and important than most other places.. Look through the wiki at changes to get an idea why.

I'd advise for a first character-- play human and don't take any +ECL bonuses at the beginning, tempting as they are, so you level fairly quickly. If you're anything like most of the rest of us you'll be making more characters down the road once you learn the ropes.

There's also a very nice system in place where you get rewards for killing off your character after level 16 so going through numerous characters is kind of the norm here, you don't see a lot of people holding on to godlike epics created in 2005 which can be a real drawback starting elsewhere.

Mages are far more convenient to play right now due to mundane gear having become much harder to get.

To play a politician, etc (or any other char type) you do not need to be a mage, or even high level. Or even competence I suppose :). You just have to do something like what the RL counterparts do: campaign , advertise and do things that get you noticed. If you wish you can be a shady type and get into intimidation, slander, bribery and whatever "corruption" you wish to bring. (You might have to pay for it dearly if you get caught but that is how it goes :).

Most of what you need to know about what should and should not be done on the server is covered, more or less, in the four main rules. Everything else draws from them as a guideline. When in doubt, don't do it until you ask someone (especially a DM). My best advice is keep IC and OOC serparate and never, ever, mix the two. I have seen more toxic situations occur because of that than anything else.

If you do things to create fun, respect other players (But not necessarily your char respecting anther char :), and not getting abusive, you'l go a long way to understanding what the server looks for.
