You can go quarterstaff weapon master, still.

It better not be a weapon after all the times my guard pc got in an argument with mages about their glowy staff didn't count as a weapon being out.

I agree that it shouldn't be a focus-able weapon. Were it up to me, they wouldn't have damage at all unless elemental damage was added to them permanently or temporarily. Just my opinion.
