Dispels and Banishes

Does anyone else think that these spells are grossly annoying and at times OP? I don't really want to make this thread as a place to whine, but am genuinely curious to have other opinions and generate a discussion.

Essentially I mean that there are alot of mage enemies in the game that just have like... 2-3 dispels/banishes/mordenkains disjunction and it really is a bummer as a higher level caster have all of my stuff constantly POOFed away because these enemies tend to use these spells on sight.

I know it's the opinion of some that summons should be nerfed to oblivion, but honestly; it truly makes me feel as if it's just hard to play any sort of summoning build at high levels with everything POOFing your stuff away.

Am I wrong? Am I crazy? Could it be that other's feel the same way? Let the discussion begin.

Welcome to Arelith, land of the dispels. Tourists come from far and wide just to take pictures of the white glittery dispel magic.

But do you think it's a bit much?

I don't mean to have a discussion where: "this is the way it is, because it is the way it is, because it is."

I want the land of white glittery " " magic to be something else ._.

Dispells are somewhat underowered. Breaches are good. They might seem overpowered, but take tempo into account. The spellcaster needs to invest a round to cast it. A round that could have been spent doing something else. This is a considerable factor especially in PvP.

I only wish that banishment and dismissal were switched. Namely Banishment has a HD cap while dismissal does not, which seems strange as Banishment is essentially supposed to be a more powerful version of dismissal. IMO dismissal should have a HD cap and banishment should not.

Well one problem that I've been coming across in pvp is that when you're by yourself and theres way more people than you, everyone can take time to prepare for the upcoming battle other than you and they can just throw a dismissal right away. Thus negating everything a summoner has.

I can't agree with you considering how many summoner builds are currently ig. At the moment there seems to be a good number of BG/Warlocks/palemasters about. So clearly playing a caster build isn't useless. Or the number of times I have seen someone soloing a place with their summons, so they aren't aren't impossible to play.

It's not impossible to play (nor did I say that), it's just quite annoying having every mage encounter start with a mage casting dispel/banish/mordenkains disjunction.

There used to be more. Dispels and mobs were scaled down a while back.

Well, if you get yourself into PvP when you're outnumbered 3 to 1 and eat the dust, it's not because dismissals and dispells are too overpowered.

As far as magic goes, everything has a counter. Death ward/shadow shield, mind blank/clarity, freedom, negative energy protection, elemental protection, abju shield etc. - these all outright negate powerful magic. Summons in their current form are very powerful, there needs to be something to counter them as well.

Besides, summons and dismissals offer a nice rock-paper-scissory game that's not IGMS spam, so sure! Also, dismissal/banishment allows a save for your summons and dispells need to dispell the summon with a dispell check, so it's not a sure deal. Word of faith on the other hand...

I'm not really concerned about the PVP aspect of that, I think that's perfectly fair. Its just the Dismissal/banishment spam from every PVE enemy with magic. Which might be fair, and I'm just biased. I just wanted to have a discussion about it (hence this forum post)

Also... Word of faith... (And Mordenkainens Disjunction) *Cries*
I don't think they have much of counterplay.

Let's not exaggerate here because that statement is false. I understand there is frustration with dispels and dismissal/banishment but dispels in general have been greatly toned-down compared to what it was previously.

Medium and higher mobs tend to have more of it, yes. This is to be expected really as you are facing a more difficult foe. Personally I have never had a problem with this, at least if you are in a party. This should be an entirely different discussion if you are trying to solo a harder area with your summons.

That being said I am sure there are mobs that are a bit trigger-happy with mentioned spells.

Yea, you're probably right. It's just the trigger happy ones that annoy me. And I do have a tendency to go to really high level areas and "risk it for the biscuit" solo. (*shrugs* I like to explore)

I've been working on abjuration focus for my mage and I mostly feel dispels are nearly a waste of a slot sometimes. Unless you're using mordenkainens, which feels like just a very expensive breach spell, nothing works. I need to do more testing though.
