Did the alternate familiars go away?

Post by Ambigue » Wed Oct 19, 2016 6:42 pm

I came back to Arelith after a 3-4 month hiatus and found my spellsword's tiny little golem familiar had reverted back to whatever the base familiar was. Some sort of house cat or bargain-basement dragon. Maybe one of them EyePods that used to be so familiar back in the 2000's. I've been poking around and haven't seen any indication as to when this happened or why.

Basicaly the Devs thought that the familiars were unbalenced. Also there was some concern that new players to the game might be confused when, upon picking their 'Eyeball' familiar they got a golem instead, or some such.
This too shall pass.

(I now have a DM Discord (I hope) It's DM GrumpyCat#7185 but please keep in mind I'm very busy IRL so I can't promise how quick I'll get back to you.)

I don't suppose it'd be possible to design a script to "purchase" a new familiar and have it replaced, since the familiar is refreshed every level up.

I'm actually grateful for the revert, just as a note. The restriction to level 1 was a bit too harsh of a swing the other way, IMO. At least the default familiars can function as a weaker tank if you're careful with them. That's priceless to someone with no access to conjuration.

They would be able to, if all aggro to them didn't automatically reroute the enemy to attack the caster.

Won't pretend I don't miss the alternate familiars though. I RPed the cat(miniturized panther) as an import from the surface for my drow.

Why settle with a kitty when you can have a panther?

The custom familiars were totally unbalanced, but they were cool.
I'm totally waiting for an update on these again.
And also, cooldown on the familiar summon, please.

Why not make a -stream option for familiars? One or two reskins per familiar type to keep it similar (because if you have a pixie why stream a lock-picking eyeball?), Maybe a dialog after level up that offers a reskin based on the selection and you're stuck with that skin until next level?

See: Totem druid and EDK silliness.

It's been always a pet peeve of mine that you summon things with completely different skin of what they actually are. This is not your standard RPG that you can wear all heavy armor and have a "social" slot to look like your armor is made of leaves, your pants have jetpacks and your helmet is a traffic cone.

Also, pixie familiar should die in a fire.

The ranger rothe companion was the coolest thing ever, I loved that.

I hate reskins.

Hence my renaming totems to 'Totemic X', to at least sort of explain that they're magical. I was initially going to give them a spirity VFX too, but elected not to under the logic that it might seem intrusive and/or not suit current totem druid's RP.

(Real talk, if I did totems from scratch though, they'd be completely different. The concept has so much potential!)

Anyway.

I did once propose a concept whereby you could collect new animal companions/familiars/etc. that would be selectable via a -stream type command. They'd have different stats, not be mere reskins. It's certainly doable, and may happen if a developer chooses to take on a project like that, but like all things, can only happen if interest and time allows.

I wouldn't count on it soon -- or in the foreseeable feature. This is really all just to say, "It hasn't happened because it's loads of work."
