It's probably because you empathied the opponent. Try it without doing that.

Plus, if you haven't noticed? When you kill an Animal you have empathied out and about you get no XP as it's the same as killing your own Henchmen. I do believe they simply vanish when you release them from the party now as well.
Same applies here, you didn't kill it, you unsummoned it technically.
