Re: Where Spies Go to Die

As the old man walked among the departing passengers towards the underdark city, a sense of familiarity washed over him, mingling with the lingering shadows that clung to the edges of his vision. With his bedroll slung over one shoulder and his pipe clenched between weathered fingers, he paused to t...

Re: Where Spies Go to Die

As the old man exited the ship onto the docks of the underdark city, carrying his bedroll under one arm, and holding his pipe in the other, he took a few puffs on his pipe, and suddenly entered a shadow dream. Shadows writhed and twisted, coalescing into a phantasmagoria of darkness and dread. His m...

Where Spies Go to Die

Chapter 1: In the depths of the underdark, where light struggled to penetrate the thick veils of shadow, a cavern languished, ensnared in the tendrils of perpetual dusk. Luminescent fungi clung to the slick walls, casting feeble glimmers upon the waters of the subterranean river, shrouding all in a ...

List of every spell, why it works, and why it doesn't

We need a list of every single spell in the game and an explanation of why it works on summons or why it doesn't work. It is unfair to unload such a vast unknown on serious rpers to figure it out on their own. We need explanations now that work IC for every single type of character according to Forg...

Re: Summon Buff Changes

So many people here practice role-play that experiments on different creatures, much of which involves casting spells on those creatures... It's just sad that so many role-play possibilities just went poof. New characters will have to read published works on those experiments to understand certain t...

Re: Summon Buff Changes

Now try this: "How come many single target spells work on humans, elves and dwarves, but not animals, outsiders, elementals and the undead?". It's an odd distinction that will go against what will commonly be expected OOC for new players and IC is probably better left unmentioned. Before a change c...

Re: Trying to understand RP rewards

As for the O.P's question. Ok here's a thing - WHY are you sneaking? What are you getting out of it? A spy who learns things and never shares that information isn't much of a spy. They're just a snoop who keeps things to themselves. The RP isn't so much just in the sneaking, it's what they do with ...

Re: Trying to understand RP rewards

RP is social interaction. If mechanical interaction was rp we would be able to murderhobo people and count that first swing of the sword as RP. This school of thought contributes to the mindset that one should only role-play when other players are around. This is not my philosophy. If it is yours, ...

Re: Trying to understand RP rewards

Your RPR, your 'Role Play Rating' is essentially a grading of not how well you play any specific character, but the quality of roleplay your bring to the server. Historically this has been something like, 0 - Brings no roleplay. Is basically never in character. May think they're in Wow. 10 - New pl...

Re: Trying to understand RP rewards

Look at this realistically. RPR comes from a DM noticing you. Sometimes it comes from watching various players (especially those with low RPR) to see what they're up to but more often than not they're probably going to be where the action is. You can say a pickpocket RPed well and it may be true bu...

Re: Trying to understand RP rewards

How are you roleplaying really well if you never get noticed? Roleplaying is interactive, you need to be roleplaying with someone. Otherwise you're just sneaking around monologing. You are assuming that interaction is noticed. This is not always the case. I'll give a mechanical example. A character...

Trying to understand RP rewards

I am really starting to realize I like role-playing sneaky people. If you see my character, that means I messed up with my role-play. How am I supposed to get RP rewards if I am role-playing really well and never get noticed?

Re: The REAL Danger of Metagaming on Forums/Discord

I am impressed by some of the reactions to this thread. Some of you are focusing on finding some solutions to the problem of opening yourselves up to public scrutiny. The thing that we love here is the game... what is the game? The game is the will of the players unfolding in the form of a story. Th...

The REAL Danger of Metagaming on Forums/Discord

I have recently come to a fascinating realization about metagaming that is simply not possible sitting around a table with a bunch of like-minded geeks. It's a threat to a gaming community. I have poked fun at metagaming in the past by saying things like, "We meta-game every-time we create a charact...

Re: Looking for Historical Stories of Arelith

http://forum.arelith.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=492 Have a look here. This is a good place to start with in-character investigations, along with the ingame books. Encylopedia Arelithica By it's very nature, Arelith has no grand overarching plot, just brief periods in history where some guy did a thin...

Re: Looking for Historical Stories of Arelith

Sometimes obscure history is better left obscure, never let the facts get in the way of telling a good story. Speaking of, if the history is so blurry, you can make up your own little stories and chances are, they won't be contested unless they directly conflict with another well known story. I def...

Re: Looking for Historical Stories of Arelith

Since I made the choice to create a human character not from Arelith, I have been having a lot of fun trying to figure out what has actually happened on the isles over the past 150 years game time. On the other hand, 150 years is enough time to feasibly create an elven adult that grew up during that...

Re: Velsharoon/Talos/Shar/Azuth worshiper role-play

Thank you for those that found me in game. I really wish it was easier to find a shrine/temple to one of these deities. Still haven't found one.
Shar is in-game, I heard... and I sorta know how to begin trying to find it.

What about Azuth/Velsharoon/Talos?

Role-playing a Velsharoon worshiper necro-wiz, and looking for some allies to role-play with. Also need a little help with finding shrines/temples to those deities, if they are around.

Re: Finding a Corpse Etiquette - Rez em, Give em back their coins

First, there is likely a thread about this...and I missed it. Sorry. Opinion: When finding a random corpse during my travels, the first thing I do after securing the area is to look at the player list to see if they are online. If they are, I contact them OOC to tell them I'll take them to a rez lo...

Brogendenstein is amazing

I've been playing d&d tabletop and other games for so many decades, and never have I ever been attracted to role-playing a dwarf. They are ugly, bull-headed, boring, and the only thing they get right is their beer. .... Until I came to Arelith. Wow.... Brogendenstein makes dwarves anything but borin...
