Re: Rest Limit - Is 50% too low?

Strong agreement here. So... WYSIWYG right? including RP based on the mechanics of the setting? So in this world, casters never sleep unless they have to. Unnecessary sleep is dangerous! It's much better to walk around droopy and take STR and CON penalties. Also, alcohol is both divine and magical a...

Re: Rethinking Conflict

I can see it both ways. As a player, conflict is fun. In contrast, my character does NOT want conflict. Unfortunately, the word is usually used to denote "PVP combat" instead of actual conflict with a back-and-forth. In fact, my view is that Arelith's death-is-meaningless is why so many people resor...

Re: A long journey home

Also sad to see Serbitar go. For a long time, you and your group were one of the central pillars of the community in front of the Logjam. Don't think we ever adventured together, but we had lots of neat discussions. Hope your next character is also fun!

Re: Monks

I would like to go back to the rock-paper-scissors point. Right now, monks seems to be best or at least strong contenders against every role. Unbreakable high SR makes them great against all spell-casters. Exceptional combat makes them good/great against melee and summons. What does a monk really wo...

Re: Visuals for Wards - Love 'em or Hate 'em?

The visuals ruin immersion. My greatest hatred is for the "floating eyes" of see-invisible and ... ultravision? NWN has a "super high magic" and "over the top" feel for how they implemented spell visuals. I'd much rather have nothing. Someone suggested it should be determined by inspection only. Per...

Re: Enchanted Shield, LOL

Off topic , but server cost is a strange beast. Consider that in NWN, every time you switch inventory pages, the server has to recalculate what to show and then send it to you (again)! A script to look through your character's inventory to take the appropriate items is WAY less taxing on the server...

Re: Enchanted Shield, LOL

My main is primarily a crafter. Spending as much time as possible building stuff - adventuring is something to do on the side while waiting for those craft points to refresh. I enjoy high-DC recipes. It's a challenge and it separates the one-focus masters from everyone else. There's nothing quite li...

Sunburst vs Vampires

According to the Sunburst spell description, if a vampire fails reflex save against Sunburst, it is destroyed. Yesterday I cast Sunburst on a group of five vampires. One of them had a spell mantle and absorbed the spell. The other four each attempted two saving throws. One of them failed first, pass...

Re: Ore vs Coal. Round 1!

I couldn't agree more with the OP about the nature of the bottleneck - if not the solution. Arelith has a coal-based economy. So many recipes depend on coal - and in large amounts. Yet, coal is no more common than other materials - with an exception of the Cordor coal mine. Result: epics grinding th...

Re: Monster Creep and Dungeon Difficulty - Is it a problem?

To answer the original question. Is it a problem? Yes and no. Yes, you too can build a sub-optimal character. What are the advantages? 1) Always lose in PVP. Sometimes so fast you don't even realize that someone is attacking you. 2) Trouble doing quests before your level is too high to do them anywa...

Re: Repeating writs changes

This is an interesting topic and I'm torn both ways. What is the purpose? 1) Discourage the "three-quick-writs and logout" power-level scheme. (sounds good) 2) Encourage people to see more of the content (sounds great) Problems: 1) Discourages casual players 2) Discourages RP players who aren't powe...

Re: Arelith’s (surface) is once again too safe and too divided

This post engenders a certain style of play without considering other views. "No safety" What do you want? More PVP? Personally, I have trouble with maintaining RP because nowhere is safe enough. OTOH, I play (limited) permadeath so that life really matters. Try it sometime. Your perception of the w...

Re: The Radiant Heart Badges are a Crux for RP

The Radiant Heart is empty. I've spent RL days (not all at once) waiting for a single paladin to come by. I suspect this is what Jack Oat is trying to fix. Is the badge itself the problem? I don't think so. I think it is a symptom. If you want to make the Radiant Heart alive, the critical part of th...

Re: Pirates, adamantine, and the issues that are slowly arising around these two

As a counter-point to the discussion, I recently had the exact opposite happen. I was alone on a boat, but fully warded with a summon because those sahuagin are troublesome. More importantly, I couldn't lens out even if I wanted to. I was carrying one of those new courier packages, because I enjoy t...

Re: Skal. Boats. The Freeze.

I love Skal. I'm a big fan of the separation from the mainland except for two problems: 1) When you are in Skal, leaving is a hard decision. Suppose you find out about some festival on the big island and you want to go. Too bad, unless you can arrange some way to get back. Yes, there are summoners.....

Re: Dice related things

This topic is discussing IC dice - which would be nifty for all sorts of role-play. The obvious example is games of chance or random determinations. "Do we go left or right?" (flip a coin). Right now, if I wanted to do that with a character, I would flip a coin OOC and then emote the result in-chara...

Re: Umber Hulk(Huge) In The Stinger Caves Should Be Changed

I will add a comment since there was another recent thread with a similar topic. Arelith wants death to be meaningful. At the same time, for proper RP, it shouldn't give unfair advantages to players just because "they've seen it before". Hard to avoid, but things like this are the example of where i...

Re: Kudos for Skal

Parchir is/was a very interesting character. As a player, I always wanted to know more about him, but my characters didn't know how to get involved or have any reason to do so. Most of my characters start on Skal, and until he disappeared later, Parchir was a hallmark of the Skal experience. For all...

Re: The First Nomad Language Day

Thank you for hosting it.
I had a lot of fun even though my character didn't really need any of it (mostly just there to meet people).
The "free drinks for perfect orders in gnomish" was a great idea.
Having competitions where people have to say things gets them involved (instead of passive).

I ran two courier quests today. Big kudos to whoever added these! The good: The quest is very easy for big rewards. Perfect for my RP-build group who can't reasonably handle the quests aimed at our level. Speaking of which, everybody says the game is too easy - try making a character that isn't "awe...

Jubjub, you are absolutely right - but that information goes with the "must have seen the whole thing before and know all the tricks". Knowing what to expect is not fair advice. Put yourself in the shoes of someone who expects this to be another quest similar to the others of the same level. Monk bu...

Re: Cordor Crypts Traps

Agree with concerns about traps in the Cordor Crypts. There are some really rude ones there that are not designed for players of that level range. If you haven't experienced them once already, these come as a surprise, possibly ending in death for the whole party. In other words, this is a quest des...

I'm going to buck the trend and say arcane casters. The reason for this is all the utility spells.
