Thanks to DM Always This Late for helping me with this, since I don't have a way to cast darkness.

I could see through darkness even when I couldn't move through/past NPCs, and in both cases it seemed like the purpley ultravision effect was present.

I didn't use darkness so it's hard to tell, but it does seem like that purplish tint that ultravision gives might be present when I can move through NPCs and absent when I can't. Yes and no. I logged onto surface server, and still couldn't move "through" orc, bugbear, or Haast Eagle spawns. When my flying character can't attack an enemy because it's on a higher or lower ledge, or across a little stream with no walkmesh.
