Re: EE and the Arelith Migration - 6 months in.

The Arelith team can fix it themselves right now if they wanted to - they would need to write a very simple NWNX plugin to do so, but the team possesses the technical aptitude to do it. The Arelith team doesn't want to invest the time into a fix, the NWNX team isn't willing to commit to updating th...

Re: Shards Online

Thanks for the support Irongron, for the record I have played NwN for about 13 years and have dabbled with Arelith and Amia from time to time. I had hopes for EE honestly in terms of seeing a full scale revitalization but following the beamdog server population lists over the last couple of months ...

Re: High level difference play.

Yeah, I'm with Conversations and Regionals. Arelith has always been about incentivizing its epics to not outstay their welcome and live to be the bulls in the figurative (lowbie RP) china shops. A change such as this would encourage the opposite. Really, lowbie affairs are already infiltrated and su...

Re: Beamdog related

There's plenty of programs out there that function in this way. Even internet browsers with only one tab open still have multiple entries. (including the primary app, since some versions of windows don't clearly split the background processes from the rest) Steam (7, 8 on startup) Battle.net (4) Di...

Re: Character Description

A good rule of thumb is the scroll bar test -- there shouldn't be one. Utilitarian descriptions are fine, but I much prefer those that tell a story. A character's precise height, weight and eye colour is only very rarely going to factor into roleplay. Flow is crucial, so prune approximators or passi...

Re: Undeads and Arelith

Necromancers being Evil Bastards™ is a rule written into the fabric of the western fantasy pastiche. There's no one ruling or sourcebook excerpt that says so, it's just the way things are. No one passage or situation from the lore is really enough to change that. It's hard to go against the grain in...

Re: Why are we not allowed to talk about the server on the forums?

-They say Arelith doesn't cater everybody's taste, when to a certain extent, it actually does. I agree with you to an extent, but I wonder if the opposite being true, in a way, is the source of all this trouble lately. Arelith markets itself as a generic blank slate that can be home to any and all ...

Re: Why are we not allowed to talk about the server on the forums?

I used that phrasing because to suggest there's been an increase in the PvP per capita from the historical average is a matter of true/false, rather than opinion/opinion. To argue that PvP has become an epidemic you'd first have to establish that it's true, which would, if even possible beyond anecd...

Re: Why are we not allowed to talk about the server on the forums?

Way back in the wayback machine, the Arelith forums had a section for this, called "The Soapbox". As you might guess from the name, it was pure cancer and I'm glad it's removed, because everything there turned out to be (very) thinly veiled attacks against other players, their factions, the DM team...

Re: Social Experiment: -notells

It's just good practice. I've been on servers that hold their RP to a similarly high standard as Arelith but permit //. The result was that the supposedly IC chat was broken in on with inane remarks, small talk or memes etc. I don't disagree that the player body shouldn't have its self control doubt...

Re: Social Experiment: -notells

If someone's got -notells on and there's OOC information you want to express, it's their loss. They've opted for a more "immersed" experience and have probably long made their peace with missing events or people logging out on them. Don't use // in the IC chat. No-one's going to bring the hammer of ...

Re: A question about population in the island

My sincerest advice to the DMs and Devs: don't actually put numbers to these things, it will bite you in the Snuggybear in the long run. This. It's fuel for determinists who wail that "x shouldn't be able to do this, or challenge so and so, because they're only statistically a y". It's silly and no...

Re: Skaldjard Conversation

I think the point raised about the culture shock could have more to do with the current influx of ENHANCED lads than any actual design philosophy. I think being made to acclimatise to the mechanics first and then ease into the realities of persistent roleplay later works adequately. The current stat...

Re: Skaldjard Conversation

Then I am not welcome here. A little melodramatic. Arelith is built on Faerun lore and with that the dynamics and conflicts inherent in the system display themselves on a daily basis. If you summon undead, it's good practice to prepare to defend their use. If you are a warlock, researching what a w...

Re: Portal Restrictions: Reactivating them?

There are so many pointless, antiquated and time-wasting mechanics in RPGs, I have no idea why it's travel time that attracts the most rage. I don't think "I don't have the time" or "this is boring to me now" are very good platforms to argue for the trivialisation of travelling in an adventure game....

Re: Casual beginner combat-averse build suggestions

Conjuration cleric is pretty much the quintessential (non-fighter) autopilot build. You don't have to think about it, but you won't be useless when the time comes. And it might. Like others have said, you can't separate conflict from RP. The last character (more or less) I played was a generic cleri...

Re: Be Kind: a proposed corollary - "Be considerate"

Roleplay your character and foster the enjoyment of your fellow player. No need to overthink it. But there will come a time when these microcosms that refuse the shared reality of the server must be broken in on by irrefutable truths (PvP, settlement mechanics, etc, if all else fails) because the n...

It always has been, it always will be, and it's great because it allows the Leadership of the Day to come in and try to craft some political machination in their own image. It's really cool. Settlement politics should be a sandbox that let creative players play...

Re: Be Kind: a proposed corollary - "Be considerate"

I have read through your whole post prior to responding and I still disagree with it. I defend my statements in that roleplay is the #1 rule on this server. If you as a player are unwilling to roleplay, there's something wrong. I can "push" and you can "push" back. I don't have to gain your consent...

Re: Will the limit on Fixtures ever be increased?

I don't get the fixture minimalist camp. I love to see player-created content. A static NWN map, however well-formed, doesn't really capture my imagination in the way that physical player history does. And some if not most of Arelith's mapping is left purposefully barren to support player agency. If...

There's not a shortage of houses in my experience, there's fierce competition for what are deemed "Good" houses. As little as 2 days ago there were 4 open apartments in the Treadstone, 2 open vaults in Sharps, and 3 open vaults in the Fool's Clover. The housing is there, but players want The Big Ho...

What about in paintings/artworks?: "The image shows John Doe with his sword drawn ..." I see this a lot, and would say I'm guilty of it myself. Does it occupy a grey area seeing as it doesn't serve to expedite hostile roleplay? What about: "The image shows a white skinned, black haired man with his ...

As a result the variance allows more often for instances of incredible luck streaks and vice versa. [quotation needed] That's what ...

Re: I am quitting Arelith forever

Here's a thread on Ravenloft's forum discussing the phenomenon: http://www.nwnravenloft.com/forum/index.php?topic=36024.0 It's a pretty interesting topic. Basically, computers struggle to generate truly random numbers (pseudo-random). Some RNGers are better than others (like C++ rand(), which is con...
